Lions and tigers and big Ks, oh my!

Ever had the urge to track big game through the African bush, be it with a rifle or a camera?

Or perhaps you have fond memories of the big blue K that graced Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene for generations?

If so, don't miss the Festival of Trees Gala at The Coeur d'Alene Resort on Saturday. These are two of the more interesting items being sold in the live auction.

The safari will be conducted by WOWAfrica, which has specialized in photographic, hunting and fishing safaris since 1996. Their website describes it as "a unique safari experience in the African bush surroundings for young and old ... truly unforgettable," and invites you to "come and experience Africa like never before!"

The package includes accommodations, ground transfers, meals, beverages, laundry service and tours for four people (two hunters and two non-hunters). Depending on the safari the winner chooses, it will take place in Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe or Mozambique. For an additional fee, you can bring friends or your favorite videographer (although they will film the safari for you). The package does not include airfare, preparatory costs or gratuities.

If you wax nostalgic about the good ol' days in Coeur d'Alene, bid on the big blue K, the symbol of the old Kootenai Medical Center brand. You won't have to take the K home with you - it will return to storage to be proudly displayed at the Festival of Trees each year. Instead, the winner will receive a traveling trophy with their name engraved on it, and become a member of the exclusive K Club.

The K was retired when Kootenai Health changed its branding. "We don't want to forget how we got to where we are today, and the K symbolizes that," said Shawn Bassham, president of Kootenai Health Foundation. "It's a beloved part of our history."

The lucky winner will also receive a gourmet dinner for eight in the home of Jon and Pam Ness, prepared by Chef Bob from Kootenai Health, which will include wine and pre-dinner entertainment.

The K was originally presented to Dr. Jim Curtis when he announced his retirement from the Kootenai Hospital District board of trustees - to his wife Gretchen's horror.

"She thought she was going to end up with that K in her front garden for the rest of her life. So I suggested that they auction it at the Festival," said Curtis. "I felt that it would be one of those things that might go on forever." And it looks like it will.

So, if you want to own a part of Coeur d'Alene's history, attend the Gala and bid on the K. Or if you'd rather experience the wonders of Africa, bid on the safari. Either way, you'll be contributing to a good cause - and have a lot of fun in the process.
