Frosh guard Davis paces Cardinals in opener
PABLO, Mont. - Freshman guard Marquis Davis scored a team-high 25 points in 27 minutes, leading the North Idaho College men's basketball team past host Salish Kootenai College 90-82 in the nonconference opener for both schools Tuesday night.
Davis, from Rainier Beach High in Seattle was 7 of 20 from the field, including 3 of 7 from 3-point range, and 8 of 9 from the line.
"It was a tough win," NIC coach Jared Phay said. "But any road win is a good win. I was really happy with our effort tonight. They did a 1-3-1 trap, which we really weren't prepared for and had to overcome some adversity. Marquis hit some big shots for us and really guarded well and forced quite a few turnovers from them (21)."
The game was delayed a half hour due to the Cardinals' arriving late from Coeur d'Alene due to a traffic accident near Dixon, Mont.
"Some guy wrecked his motorcycle and we were the first people on scene," Phay said. "(NIC assistant coach) Corey (Symons) called 911, so we had to wait until the cops showed up before we could continue on the way."
D.J. Fish scored a game-high 29 points for Salish Kootenai, and also had seven rebounds.
Brad Wallace scored 13 points for NIC, which hosts the Gonzaga club team on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Christianson Gym. Braxton Tucker added 11 points and seven rebounds, and Washington State transfer Bryce Leavitt had nine points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.
