Viking girls repeat

IDAHO FALLS - One was expected.

The other championship coming back to the area from Saturday's state high school cross country meet at Freeman Park kind of flew under the radar.

In the 5A girls race, the Coeur d'Alene Vikings defended their title with 63 points thanks to four finishers in the top 10, beating runner-up Boise by 37.

"We're more than excited right now," Coeur d'Alene coach Cathy Compton said. "This was all as a team. The girls stayed united and perfect together. There was some pretty tough competition as usual, but the girls handled it with grace and style."

The past three years, Coeur d'Alene Charter senior Leif Fredericks had been right on the edge of winning a state title, finishing fourth as a sophomore and third last year.

Fredericks finished the job this year, winning the 2A boys race in 17:00.74, also helping the Panthers finish with a second-place trophy as a team.

"It feels incredible," Fredericks said. "It's still kind of unreal. I knew I had to stay close to Josh (Balls of Soda Springs, who finished second). I felt that if I could keep in contact in the last 400 meters, I had a shot. It turned out where I managed to do it. Everything went blank and I just went for it."

5A: Sophomore Emily Callahan finished third for Coeur d'Alene in 19:14.03, with Krista Story fifth in 19:29.45, Kara Story sixth in 19:29.48 and freshman Caitlin Conway eighth in 19:42.08.

Callahan was battling leg pains leading up to the race, according to Compton.

"She ran her heart out today," Compton said. "Those pains we weren't aware of before the race, but she did really great."

"I thought I had a good race, but now I can't walk," Callahan said. "It was a fun course."

Sam Mckinnon of Mountain View in Meridian won the girls race in 18:26.31.

In the boys race, Lake City junior Kyler Little finished fourth in 16:35.33, followed by teammate Jake Finney in fifth in 16:37. The Timberwolves finished sixth, with the Viking boys 10th.

Capital High of Boise won the boys team championship, with Andrew Rafla of Timberline (Boise) winning the boys race in 15:54.48.

4A: Delany Gorton finished the girls race in 22:42.85 and Cooper Hainey the boys race in 18:57.54 as the lone qualifiers from Lakeland.

3A: Sam St. Mars finished 14th, but it was the finishes of Brayden Menti (18th) and Ryan Richardson (19th) that helped the Timberlake boys finish third, just out of second by Teton by two points.

Shelley won the boys title and Sugar-Salem won its second straight girls title.

Natalie Herring finished seventh in the girls race for Timberlake, which finished fourth.

2A: For the Coeur d'Alene Charter boys, it's the best finish they've had at state.

"They definitely deserve it," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Lewis Watkins said. "I'm really proud of those guys."

Soda Springs won its second straight girls title, finishing with a perfect score of 15 points, and also claimed the boys team title.

"Looking at how dominate Soda Springs was, I'm just happy with getting second," Watkins said. "The girls getting a perfect score was insane. I'm really pleased. They all ran smart races and really shined today."

Maddie Iott finished 18th in the girls race for Coeur d'Alene Charter, which finished fifth.
