STUDENTS: Let's keep it green

| May 26, 2013 9:00 PM

Our community seems to be ignoring some environmental issues that have a heavy impact on our ecosystem.

We are a group of students at Lake City High School who have taken the time to look at storm water quality in our area. Storm water, which is water from rain or snow that doesn’t immediately soak into the ground, flows into our storm drains and directly into our lakes and rivers. Storm water can carry pollutants such as fertilizers, chemicals, garbage and pet waste and be detrimental to the bodies of water near us.

Why is this important to know? Because WE are the problem and WE are the solution.

In order to save our lakes and rivers, we can take really simple and easy steps to reduce pollutants in storm water. We can properly dispose of pet waste, use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly, sweep driveways and sidewalks instead of hosing the debris into the street, use a pan to catch vehicle fluid when changing oil, and wash cars on your lawns or at a commercial car wash.

Let’s do our part, Coeur d’Alene. Let’s keep Idaho green and beautiful.
