PREP ROUNDUP: Cd'A jumpers sock it to 'em
* TRACK AND FIELD
POST FALLS - Super heroes are often seen at night.
But in the case of Coeur d'Alene senior Makenzie Baker - his flight was seen during the daytime at Thursday's annual District 1 All-Star Meet at Post Falls High.
Baker won the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 9 1/2 inches - just four inches off the school record he tied at last week's Inland Empire League Championships.
"I've just been training hard," Baker said. "I set a couple of goals last year after finishing fourth at state (in the long jump) of breaking the school record. The other was to take the state title. I've just been working hard and it's paid off so far. It feels good to win. It just helps me get more and more prepared for the state meet. It's going to be a battle."
Baker and teammate Anthony Dahlhemier went 1-2 in the long jump, with Baker donning Batman socks and Dahlheimer wearing Robin socks. Dahlheimer jumped a 20-3 3/4.
"If they'll allow us to wear them, Batman and Robin will be going to state and they're going to take over," Baker said. "I figured we're going 1-2 at state in the long jump, so we'd wear them."
In the boys 1,600-meter run, Coeur d'Alene Charter junior Leif Fredericks took a second off his personal high with a 4:39.42, but finished second to Sandpoint junior Sam Levora - who broke a 19-year school record in 4:21.52.
The previous record of 4:25.52 was held by Sandpoint assistant coach Matt Brass.
"He'd pretty well taken it after the first two laps," said Fredericks of Levora's win. "He'd pulled pretty far ahead of everyone else. On that race, I was just trying to run consistent and pretty well."
"Basically from the line, coach (Matt) Brass said some words to me about today being the day to break the record," Levora said. "Throughout the race and that first lap, I knew I could do it. I was really going off what encouragement he was giving me and saying that I could do it."
"It's fantastic," Brass said. "Records are there to be broken. I'm thrilled and have been working with him for the last couple of years to get this. He's been outstanding and is one of a core group of 25 kids that has bought into the program and does the work in the offseason. He's been great and sets a great example and earned every second of it today."
