Jeanie, 89, passed away March 21, 2013, surrounded by family at Hospice House in Hayden, after a brief illness. Jean’s family was by her side over the past few weeks while at Kootenai Medical Center and Hospice House, and were with her at the time of her passing.

Jeanie was born April 10, 1923, in Nehalem, Ore., to Francis and Maude Buckles. Jeanie married Paul Wheeler in 1942, and they settled in Coeur d’Alene in 1948.

Jeanie was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She loved playing the piano, gardening, the Oregon Coast, playing cards and spending time with her family and friends.

Jeanie is survived by her daughter, Peggy Leonard and son-in-law Patrick in Dalton Gardens; granddaughter Ashley DeAustin and husband Jonathan in Boise; granddaughter Katy Van Heel and husband Kevin; great-grandsons, Gavin and Gibson Van Heel in Hayden. She is also survived by her sister, Patty Santos in Yakima, Wash.; niece Lin Kallen in Yakima; nephew Gary Santos in Wenatchee, Wash.; niece Doris Shell in Alabama; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by husband Paul in 2006, son Randy in 2012, sister June Buckles in 2013 and companion Dell Hoffman in 2013.

Memorials donations can be made to Hospice House, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835. A private family gathering was held.

Our family sends grateful thanks to all of the staff at Hospice House. Their compassion and care during the last weeks gave our family much comfort and we will be forever thankful.
