CHICKENS: Cuts fully explained

| March 6, 2013 8:33 PM

In a wonderful March 2 front-page article on poultry production by Alecia Warren, it was noted that Deirdre’s position at the local Extension Office had been eliminated due to budget cuts. While I appreciate the calls and comments received, I want to assure all concerned citizens that this budget reduction was not due to actions by our county commissioners.

Deirdre’s position was funded through a supplemental federal grant to provide additional outreach to low-income families. Unfortunately, this grant encountered significant reductions recently.

As many citizens are aware, adequate levels of county and state funding are required to sustain basic local Extension operations. For FY 2013-14, Kootenai County Extension has submitted our proposed budget. We look forward to working with the commissioners in providing the level of county support needed to continue delivering quality programs and assistance for our local residents. We hope to know what the proposed county funding level will be on or before Aug. 1.

I want to sincerely thank our citizens for their ongoing concern and support for local Extension programs and operations — plus the Coeur d’Alene Press for their help in publicizing our educational efforts.
