HAYDEN - It's going to be called Peak Tennis in Hayden.

Peak Health and Wellness Center is having a 45,000-square-foot tennis facility constructed in Hayden, costing $5 million for the purchase of the land, construction and furnishings.

It's projected to be completed by the end of the year. It's located behind the Prairie Shopping Center, just across the parking lot from Peak's Hayden fitness facility at 190 W. Centa Drive.

Work started two weeks ago at the site, which is just less than 4 acres.

Gary Retter, owner and manager of Peak, said Tuesday the new facility will create 12 new jobs.

It will have five indoor tennis courts, a group-fitness studio, what he called a "mind-body studio," full locker rooms, steam and sauna rooms, a juice bar, large lounge and lobby area.

Small's Construction Co., of Rathdrum, is the general contractor, and Miller Stauffer Architects, of Coeur d'Alene, designed the facility.

Retter said Peak needs more tennis courts to meet the demand of its members. He said the club will be working with area high schools to offer the facilities for spring sports, which can often be interrupted by rainy weather.

Having the new facility will free up space at the other Peak locations, which include Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls.

Retter said tennis is a fast-growing sport.

"We're overflowing in tennis stuff, with lessons, camps, and we just don't have the space," he said.

An envisioned second phase would include an aquatic center, he said.

"Ultimately, we want this to be a tennis and swim facility," Retter said.

Peak has been operating in Coeur d'Alene for 32 years, in Hayden for 15 years and Post Falls for 10.
