NIC Trades and Industry students earn state awards

Students in several of North Idaho College's Trades and Industry programs took home six gold, silver and bronze medals from the annual Idaho SkillsUSA competition in Nampa.

"I couldn't be more pleased with the results of the competition and how our students performed," said Doug Anderson, NIC Trades and Industry division chair. "We not only competed with bigger schools - we excelled."

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization that serves teachers, high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade occupations as well as technical and skilled service trade occupations. NIC competed against both two-year and four-year colleges from around the state.

Collision Repair and Technology competition

Josh Hartt, of Post Falls, was awarded a Gold Medal and Matt Sima, of Rathdrum, was awarded a Silver Medal in the Collision Repair category.

Richard Schwemmer, from Coeur d'Alene, was awarded a Gold Medal and Ian Sheppard, from Harrison, was awarded a Bronze Medal in the Auto Refinishing Technology category.

Machining and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Technology competition

Jeff Leach, of Hayden, was awarded the Silver Medal in the Precision Machining category. Jeff Leach and Carlee Floyd, both from Blanchard, also represented NIC at the competition.

Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Technology competition

Aaron Scott, of Coeur d'Alene, was awarded a Bronze Medal. Steve Sayler, of Hayden, earned a fourth-place finish; Ed Jewett, of Post Falls, earned a fifth-place finish, Garret Swanson, of Corvallis, Mont., earned a seventh-place finish, and Rob Tyrrell, of Coeur d'Alene, earned an eighth-place finish.
