Man faces rape, kidnapping charges

COEUR d'ALENE - Michael David Nixon, 31, was still in a guarded hospital room Tuesday recovering in fair condition from alleged self-inflicted wounds he received during a nine-hour standoff with police on Monday.

In the meantime, the Coeur d'Alene Police Department has obtained a warrant for Nixon's arrest. He will be charged with first-degree kidnapping, rape and lewd conduct with a minor.

His bond is set for $500,000.

The county's criminal database shows that police filed a case against Nixon Tuesday morning that was sealed by a judge, and he has another sealed case pending in Kootenai County that was filed sometime earlier this year.

Nixon is still on probation for an "excessive" driving under the influence arrest in 2012, which was pleaded down to a regular DUI in December.

Police were called to Nixon's house at 2023 Seventh St. on Monday afternoon when a 13-year-old girl, who is believed to be his niece, reported him as the suspect in an aggravated sexual assault.

Nixon allegedly held his niece against her will for several hours during the reported assault. Police said the victim was able to escape after Nixon fell asleep.

When police arrived at his residence on Monday around 1 p.m., Nixon refused to come to the door, so police obtained a search warrant and called in a Special Weapons and Tactic Unit to try and talk Nixon into turning himself in.

A major standoff ensued with police from four agencies that lasted for nearly 9 hours before police were able to retrieve Nixon from the home.

While arresting Nixon it was discovered that he had apparently "cut himself."

Scanner traffic indicated that Nixon may have slit his own wrists, but police were not able to confirm that.

Police also found a natural gas leak in the home and had to scramble to clear the area until the gas could be shut off about a half-an-hour later.

Nixon will face his first appearance within 24 hours after he is released from the hospital and booked in the county jail.
