SWIMMING
Eleven swimmers from the Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team competed in the 37th annual Washington Open in Federal Way on Jan. 17-20. The meet attracted nearly 800 swimmers from around the Northwest and California.
Leading the pack for CAST was Bryce Kananowicz, who took home male high point honors. Kananowicz won the 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM, and added a second-place finish in the 1000. Bryce also made it to the top 8 in finals in the 100 breast, 200 fly, 100 fly, and 500 free.
Ethan Cordes also scored big points for the Coeur d'Alene squad, finishing 6th in the 50 freestyle and 12th in the 100 butterfly. Nicole Rozier rounded out the finals swims by placing 24th in the 50 freestyle.
Sarah Nicholls recorded a near-record time in the women's 200 breaststroke, missing the Inland Empire 11-12 girls record by 2 seconds. That is the second fastest time this year in the Pacific Northwest.
Cole Curtis went 5 for 5 in best times, and was a crucial relay leg during his first time competing in an open meet. Kade Hern was a solid 5 for 6 on best times despite battling illness all weekend. Tiffany Portue recorded three best times, including a 3-second drop in the 200 yard backstroke, and Jon Archer went 3 for 4 on best times including a 5-second drop in the 200 back. Kayla Hern dropped time in 3 events, while Matt Chastain went 2 for 3 on best times and anchored the 400 freestyle relay.
The Coeur d'Alene team will next compete in the Junior Championship meet in Ellensburg, Wash., Feb. 15-17, and will be sending Ethan Cordes and Bryce Kananowicz to the Orlando Grand Prix that same weekend.
ELKS HOOP SHOOT
Two former National Hoop Shoot participants competed in the North Idaho District Hoop Shoot competition on Jan. 26 at Sunnyside Elementary School in Kellogg, and as would be expected, both advanced to the Idaho State Hoop Championships on Feb. 9 in Nampa.
Zach Mackimmie and Dylan Bengtson will be joined by three of their Coeur d'Alene Elks Lodge teammates at the state competition. This is Mackimmie's fourth trip to the state championships and Bengtson's second.
Bengtson might have had the toughest fight on his hands in the 10-11 year old age group. All four competitors were in a neck and neck battle after the first round of 10 shots. Kellogg's Gavin Luna led with eight points, and was shooting in the final position. Wallace's Zackery Welch and Bengtson were one shot back while Sandpoint's Will Reeves was two behind the leader with six made shots.
Things didn't get any easier as the second round started and Reeves calmly hit 11 of his 15 shots for a total score of 17. Welch was next to the line and made 10 shots, equaling the final tally of Reeves.
Bengtson, who went to the national championships in 2011 as a 9 year old, dialed in his shot and canned 13 of 15 in round two to take a comfortable lead. Luna finished with a final tally of 15.
Mackimmie, moving up to the 12-13 year old division, found himself in unfamiliar territory after round one - behind Wallace's Hunter Stutzke. Mackimmie started slowly and had to rally to hit seven of his first 10 shots while Stutzke dropped six in a row to finish with eight of 10.
Round two was all Mackimmie as the 2012 national champion participant, shooting in the first position, hit 10 in a row to end the round and finish with a total of 20. That put the pressure on Stutzke, who missed five of his last eight shots to seal the victory for MacKimmie. Sandpoint's Billy Brackett took third with 11 and Kellogg's Logan Jacobson was fourth with eight out of 25 shots.
Despite not having the pedigree of his teammates, Tyson Pottenger was the top shooter of the day, winning the 8-9 year old boys' division. Pottenger and Sandpoint's Dawson Owens matched each other shot for shot in round one, entering the second round tied at eight.
Pottenger was the first to shoot in round two and reeled off three multiple-shot strings, including the final six shots to make 13 of 15 in the round and total 21 for the day. Dawson missed his first shot of the second round, giving him very little leeway the rest of the round. The small opening was shut when Owens missed three consecutive shots in the middle of the round. Owens ended up in second place with 18 points.
Kellogg's Justin Taylor was third with 16 points and Wallace's Travis Lohr finished with seven points for the day.
Taylor Dietz-Roberts ran away with the girls' 8-9 division. Reminiscent of her fast shooting style, the youngster from Coeur d'Alene left her opponents behind in every round. Dietz-Roberts made five of her first 10 shots in the first round to take a comfortable three shot lead. Shooting first in each round, Dietz-Roberts then quickly made 10 of 15 in round two to make it almost impossible to catch her.
"I've never seen anyone shoot baskets like Taylor in all my years in the Hoop Shoot,' said Coeur d'Alene Elks Hoop Shoot Director Rick Alexander. "She doesn't take any warmup shots and doesn't dribble the ball to gather her thoughts. As soon as the referee hands her the ball, it is on its way to the hoop. She is a gunner. It's almost like it's second nature to her."
Sandpoint's Jordie Breeden took second with a final score of seven and then beat out Kellogg's Gracelynn Nearing 4-3 in a tiebreaker shootout.
In the girls' 12-13 age group, Ali Rollins, representing Coeur d'Alene, was in a deadlock with Sandpoint's Brooke Stevens at 7-7 at the end of round one. Close behind was Wallace's Rylie Gunderson with six in round one.
As it was for the Coeur d'Alene shooters most of the day, Rollins was first up in round two. While the 13-year-old never did hit a hot streak, she was consistent in round two, making 10 of 15 for a final score of 17.
Stevens was next to the line and hit her first three of round two but followed that up with three straight misses. Stevens hit five of her final 12 shots to end up in second place. Gunderson still had a chance to make the trip to Nampa, but a rough start in the second round sealed the win for Rollins.
In the girls' 10-11 age division, Sandpoint's Skyler Hill won the event with 11 points in 25 shots. The representative from Coeur d'Alene did not compete in the district championships.
