Lakeland school bus slides off icy road; no injuries

A Lakeland School District bus with 14 teenagers aboard slid off an icy roadway Tuesday afternoon north of Hayden on Rimrock Road.

The bus was traveling southbound on Rimrock, negotiating a curve, when it began to slide sideways on compact snow and ice on the roadway, a Kootenai County Sheriff's Department news release said.

The accident occurred before 4 p.m. south of Corbin Hill Road. The bus struck a tree on the rear passenger area.

Two students, 15 and 16 years old, who were sitting at the rear of the bus at the time of the collision complained of soreness but were not transported by medical personnel. The students ranged from 13 to 17 years old, the sheriff's department said.

The bus driver, 58-year-old Debbie Page, of Otis Orchards, Wash., was unable to regain control of the bus and it slid off the roadway. Page estimated her speed at 5 mph prior to the collision.

The Lakeland School District notified the parents of the children and another bus responded to the scene, taking custody of the children and continuing the bus route, the sheriff's department said.

At this time, there have been no citations issued and the cause of the collision remains under investigation.

It appears the speed of the bus, even at 5 mph, was too fast for the road conditions at the time, according to the sheriff's department.
