PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Vikings get back on track, blast Moscow

MOSCOW - Madison Sumner had 16 points, nine assists and four steals as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings beat the Moscow Bears 63-20 in the regular season finale for both Saturday at Bear Den.

Brittany Tackett scored 16 points for Coeur d'Alene (16-4), which will be the No. 2 seed in the 5A Region 1 tournament and faces No. 3 seed Lewiston at 5:30 on Friday at The Arena in Post Falls.

"Now, it's time for serious basketball," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "You hope you win and stay on the healthy side now. You just never know, it's sink or swim at this point."

Tabitha Wellsandt had seven rebounds for Coeur d'Alene, which played without senior forward Kendalyn Brainard, who injured her left ankle in Friday night's loss at Post Falls that decided the 5A Inland Empire League title.

Moscow (6-11) faces the winner of Tuesday's 4A Region 1 tournament game between Lakeland at Sandpoint on Thursday at Bear Den.

Jordan Ward scored seven points for Lakeland (3-16), which travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday in the opening game of the 4A Region 1 tournament.

SPIRIT LAKE - Savannah Woods scored seven of her 14 points in the first quarter as the visiting Badgers jumped out to a 13-2 lead after the first eight minutes in an Intermountain League win over the Tigers.

"We came out really flat - I thought they outhustled us the entire game," Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. "I thought that was the first time we've been outhustled since November."

Bonners is 14-5, 3-3 IML.

Jessica Norlander scored 14 points for Timberlake (2-15, 0-5), which travels to Kellogg on Tuesday.

COEUR d'ALENE - The visiting Bulldogs (13-7, 6-0 Central Idaho League) opened up a double-digit lead in the second quarter, then held off a late Panthers rally to wrap up the league title.

Charter (14-3, 4-2) trailed by 14 points midway through the fourth quarter before senior Lexi Turkenburg (17 points) had a personal 8-0 run to pull the Panthers within 41-35 with 1:30 remaining. Anna Verhaege's drive to the basket cut Grangeville's lead to five points with a minute left before Kaleala Bass (18 points) helped the Bulldogs close it out.

"We struggled in the second quarter, but fought through it and showed some character in the second half," said Charter coach Doug Grant, who noted his team was hurt by 11-for-30 free-throw shooting. "We usually shoot 65 percent from the line, and we struggled to shoot 30 percent today."

Jacklyn Jensen, a 6-foot-2 post, tallied eight points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Panthers, who host Wallace on Monday.

"My scorers scored and it was a well-rounded win because everybody contributed," Lakeside coach Stacey Sonder said. "Even the people who didn't score contributed and we are playing really well as a team."

Christina Nilson had 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists for Lakeside (11-8, 5-2), which hosts Wallace in its regular-season finale Tuesday.

Alex Gwin added 11 points, and Kate Gjevre grabbed nine rebounds for the Royals (13-7, 9-3 MCL), who travel to Kootenai on Tuesday to face Kootenai Thunder.

"Madison Canale gave us a good effort," North Idaho Christian coach Jerry Bittner said. "She held Lindsey Howard to two points through 3 1/2 quarters)."

Shannon Kempton led Christian Center (11-3, 11-3, at Pullman Christian on Monday) with 11 points.
