PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Hot-shooting Charter tops Grangeville

| January 27, 2013 8:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Hot shooting trumped superior depth and size on Saturday afternoon, as Coeur d'Alene Charter sank 10 3-pointers en route to a 57-52 Central Idaho League win over Grangeville at Holy Family Catholic School.

The Panthers (10-5, 2-3 CIL) had six of their triples in the third quarter, with senior Bryan Smith canning three straight early in the period to put the hosts ahead for good.

A buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Christian Pedersen gave Charter a 44-33 lead with one quarter to play, and the Panthers used a zone defense to keep the Bulldogs largely in check.

"They just crushed us on the inside the first time we played them (a 63-43 loss on Dec. 28), so we wanted to force them to beat us from the outside," Charter coach Chris Pedersen said. "Bryan got really hot in the third quarter, and we fed off him."

Smith led all scorers with 29 points, including 4-for-9 shooting beyond the arc, while Pedersen added 17 points. Derek Brown led Grangeville (10-6, 3-2) with 17 points.

Matt Horne scored 18 points and Tyrel Derrick and Scott Simpson had 11 points apiece for Lakeland (7-9), which travels to Moscow on Tuesday.

"Lakeland plays really well," McLean said. "Coach (Dave) Stock(well) does a great job with them and I'm impressed with what that did in that environment. Tyrel really makes them go and is just so good with the ball and getting his guys their shot. As a coach, I could watch him play everyday."

"We fell behind 16-6 after the first quarter and they came out, pressured us and were physical," Coeur d'Alene coach Kent Leiss said. "We dug ourselves a hole, but cut the lead to four points in the second, but we got called for a technical and after that, they beat us pretty badly. We're just turning the ball over way too much and it was a big contributor to us only scoring 37 points. Defensively, it was OK, they had 49 - but scoring 37 was not."

Alajah Tripp scored 10 points for Coeur d'Alene (10-6), which travels to Lewiston for a 5A Inland Empire League game on Tuesday.

"We had good energy," St. Maries coach John Bisson said. "Defensively we played solid; that was a real plus for us. Our halfcourt defense was much better today than we've had in the past, and we seemed to get into a good rhythm offensively."
