ANNIVERSARIES

Carol and Walter Sorenson

65th Anniversary

Carol and Walter Sorenson are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary.

They were married on Jan. 29, 1948, in The Chapel of Roses in Pasadena, Calif.

Walt is retired from the Los Angeles City Fire Department. Carol worked as a secretary bookkeeper for many years, but mostly as a homemaker raising four children, Cynthia Mattews of Coeur d'Alene, John Sorenson of Post Falls, Valerie Johnson of Oakdale, Calif., and Robert Sorenson of Newhall, Calif.

They have seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Carol and Walt will be celebrating with their family and friends.

Larry and Joan Thorsness

50th Anniversary

Larry and Joan Thorsness are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

Joan works for the Coeur d'Alene School District. Larry is retired from Knudtsen Chevrolet. They have two sons, Jay B. Thorsness and wife Crystal of Gresham, Ore., and Scott A. Thorsness and wife Jutta of Post Falls; and six grandchildren.

Their children are planning a celebration for the couple with family and friends on Feb. 2, 2013, at the Coeur d'Alene Inn.

John and Wendy Kelpin

30th Anniversary

John and Wendy Kelpin will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary on Jan. 29, 2013.

The longtime Hayden residents have resided in North Idaho for more than 20 years.

BIRTHS

Lily Nicole Harp was born Jan. 20, 2013, to Lesli Sell and Shawn Harp, at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene. She weighed 5 pounds 7 ounces. Sister is Kaylie Harp, 9 months. Maternal grandparents are JoAnne Sherman, and LaVere and Teresa Sell. Paternal grandparents are Christine and Forrest Harp.

MILITARY

Air Force Airman Taylor M. Allphin graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Allphin is the daughter of Karye Moore of North Sedona St., Rathdrum.

She is a 2011 graduate of Timberlake Senior High School in Spirit Lake.

Air Force Airman Cory M. Kuhns graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Kuhns earned distinction as an honor graduate.

He is the son of Janelle Kuhns of Hayden.

The airman is a 2011 graduate of Lake City High School in Coeur d'Alene.

Air Force Airman Braxton K. Ramos graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Ramos is the son of Kerri Ramos of Post Falls.

He is a 2011 graduate of Robertson High School in Fremont, Calif.

Air Force Airman Guy J. Butterfield graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Butterfield is the son of Guy and Michelle Butterfield of Coeur d'Alene.

He is a 2010 graduate of Lake City High School in Coeur d'Alene.

Army Staff Sgt. Michael J. Cavallo has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Operation Enduring Freedom is the official name given to anti-terrorism military operations involving U.S. troops and allied coalition partners.

Cavallo has served in the military for nine years.

He is the son of Penelope Cavallo of Coeur d'Alene.

The staff sergeant is a 2003 graduate of Etiwanda High School in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

Marine Corps Pvt. Brandi E. Mason, daughter of Donna Mason of Hayden and Dennis Mason of Post Falls, earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

For 13 weeks, Mason stayed committed during some of the world's most demanding entry-level military training in order to be transformed from civilian to Marine instilled with pride, discipline and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. Training subjects included close-order drill, marksmanship with an M-16A4 rifle, physical fitness, martial arts, swimming, military history, customs and courtesies.

One week prior to graduation, Mason endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits' minds and bodies. Upon completion, recruits are presented the Marine Corps emblem and called Marines for the first time.

Mason is a 2012 graduate of Coeur d'Alene High School of Coeur d'Alene.
