RIGHTS: Event helped make the dream real
Last Friday, the 5th graders of Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls School Districts participated in the 28th Annual Human Rights Celebration at Schuler Auditorium. Through the combined efforts and generosity of The Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations, Idaho Humanities Council’s Endowment for Humanities Education, North Idaho College, and The Human Rights Education Institute, we were able to bring The Right to Dream to the students.
The Right to Dream, performed by Dior Davenport of Living Voices, follows the life of a young person as she experiences segregation and inequality in the 1950s and ‘60s. The story details her life and dedication to ending racism in the United States of America.
The morning was further enhanced with students dancing, singing, and sharing essays about their dreams for the future. I am proud to be a part of a community that makes purposeful efforts to educate our youth on the history and importance of human dignity and respect for all. For those of us who have called North Idaho our home for many years, we have seen what complacency can do. Our community has embraced a commitment to the fair treatment of all people. We are purposeful in ensuring North Idaho will remain a wonderful place for all people to call home.
Last Friday was a wonderful example of these efforts. Thank you so much to all who contributed to the success of this worthy event.
