Irene Sargent, 92
Irene (Carlberg) Sargent, age 92, resident of Coeur d’Alene, passed away Jan. 17, 2013, at Life Care Center of Coeur d’Alene. She was born May 9, 1920, in Hibbing, Minn. Irene was adopted as an infant by John and Mary Schwockert and raised on a small farm near Deer River, Minn. She had many chores not the least of which was milking several cows twice a day, seven days a week.
Irene enjoyed school and was an excellent student. She was also active in 4-H and won several ribbons for her projects.
In 1937, she married Glenn Carlberg. She and her husband continued to live at Deer River until 1942, when they and their children moved to Hanford, Wash. In 1944, they moved to Coeur d’Alene.
Irene was active in PTA and held various administrative positions including State PTA Public Chairperson.
Irene and Glenn loved athletics and closely followed their two sons ballgames throughout high school and college. Later, she watched nearly all the games played by her grandsons from Little League to college baseball and basketball. And later, watching Lake City High School basketball games coached by her grandson. While at Life Care she watched Gonzaga Basketball and the Mariners.
Irene helped with the family finances by growing gardens, canning and being a great cook.
After her husband Glenn died in 1966, she worked at the Kootenai Medical Center for a number of years before marrying Morris Sargent in 1974. They then moved to Spokane. While in Spokane, she joined the Eagles Lodge, where she enjoyed playing cards and dancing. When Morris died in 1984, Irene moved back to Coeur d’Alene to be near her family.
Irene loved to gamble, she liked betting on horses and attended the Kentucky Derby in 1968. She also loved going to the casino. In her later years, she played penny poker at Life Care.
In 2000, Irene suffered a series of strokes and other illnesses and became a resident of Life Care Center of Coeur d’Alene, where she resided the last 13 years of her life.
Irene is survived by four children and spouses; Gay and (Jim) Winger of Coeur d’Alene, Al and (Linda) Carlberg of Henderson, Nevada, Patty and (Bill) Turner of Coeur d’Alene and Dr. Terry and (Cheryl) Carlberg of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Nine grandchildren; Jim and Mike Winger, Russell and Janeen Carlberg, Tracey Wellman and Steve Turner, Aimee Hegre, Miska Paget and Nicole Carlberg. Fourteen great grands; Katie & J.J. Winger, Sue and Michael Winger, Nathaniel and Nicholas Carlberg, Coby Yoshida, Chantelle Stroud and Casey Turner, and Todd, Curtis and Terri and Wellman, Brynne and Gahnan Hegre. Great Great Grandson; Brody Stroud.

Private burial took place at Forest Cemetery.
