Beware of winter injuries

| January 23, 2013 8:00 PM

We are almost through January. As anyone from North Idaho knows, that usually means snow and ice are here as well.

Many of us shovel out our driveways when the snow comes. This leads to a rise in back injuries during this time of year. Individuals are already less active in winter, so they are more prone to hurting themselves when they end up exerting a lot of energy.

This commonly happens when we're shoveling snow. Sometimes we expect the snow, but sometimes (it seems more often than not) our weathermen miss the forecast and we must get to the driveway on short notice to ensure we can get to work or school.

Our lack of activity and tendency to try to do too much increases the likelihood of slipped discs or pulled back muscles.

Another injury to look out for during this time of year is a fractured wrist. These types of injuries are usually caused by falls. People will slip on icy or slick ground and fall. When people fall, they tend to try and break their falls by putting their arms down. This leads to injured wrists, like fractures.

To prevent these back and wrists injuries, it's important to know to be aware of the dangers. If you're going to go out shoveling, do some stretching exercises beforehand to loosen up your back muscles. Once you're outside and at work, never lift too much snow at once or make quick turns if you're carrying a shovel full of snow. The extra weight can tip your balance and cause an injury.

When you're out and about, just pay special attention to what you're doing and where you're stepping and avoid ice whenever possible. If you do fall, try to remember not to brace yourself by putting your arms down.

By taking these steps, you can make the winter months safer.
