Vandal Hall of Famer

Anderson passes away

Idaho Vandal Athletics Hall of Fame member Wayne D. Anderson passed away on Wednesday. He was 82 years old.

A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. at the University Inn-Best Western in Moscow.

Anderson, a native of Spokane, where he was a 1949 graduate of Rogers High, was a student-athlete, coach and athletics administrator at Idaho. He played football and baseball for Idaho before serving as an assistant coach in football and basketball, and ultimately head coach in basketball and baseball. Later, he was an assistant athletic director.

His days as a student-athlete included triple duty in football as a quarterback, defensive lineman and punter, in addition to baseball. More than 60 years later, he is still ranked 16th on the Vandals' all-time passing yardage list in football and is seventh on the all-time career punts list.

Anderson was honored as the Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year in basketball in 1967-68 and the conference baseball coach of the year in 1965 and 1966. He left coaching in 1970 for an assistant athletic director's position, where he served for four years before spending the next eight years in the private sector. He returned to the school in 1983 and was an assistant athletic director until his retirement in 1994.

The Wayne D. Anderson Athletic Scholarship Endowment was established in 1993 to honor Anderson and in 1995, the football program established the Wayne Anderson Coaches Award, which is given annually to the player who best exemplifies what it means to be a Vandal.

Lake City High to host

baseball camp Saturday

Players and coaches from the Lewis-Clark State baseball team will be in Coeur d'Alene to hold an all-skills baseball camp from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for players in grades 6 to 12 at Lake City High.

"It was one of the things we wanted to do was connect with the campus in Coeur d'Alene," first- year Lewis-Clark State coach Jeremiah Robbins said. "We thought baseball would be a good thing to help out the community up there, and with (first-year Lake City coach) Travis Georgius being an (LC) alum, it worked out well."

Cost is $35 and participants can sign up at the door.

"We're expecting 35-40 kids, so I think it's going to be a good opportunity for the kids and LC State to get some northern exposure for the program," Georgius said.
