PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Strong 2nd quarter lifts Vikings past Lakeland

| January 16, 2013 8:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Colby Daniels scored a team-high 13 points to lead the Coeur d'Alene Vikings past the Lakeland Hawks 63-50 in a nonleague boys basketball game on Tuesday at Elmer Jordan Court.

"I thought in the second quarter, we showed a little spark to extend the lead at halftime," Coeur d'Alene coach Kent Leiss said. "But I really thought in the second half, we were comfortable just trading baskets with them and did enough to get the win."

Tyrell Derrick scored 19 points and Matt Horne added 16 - all coming in the second half - for Lakeland (6-7), which hosts Sandpoint on Thursday in a 4A Inland Empire League game.

"We held Horne scoreless in the first half, but he heated up in the second half," Leiss said. "Derrick had a nice game for them also."

Jared Moore scored 11 points for Coeur d'Alene (9-4), which hosts Lewiston on Friday in a 5A Inland Empire League game.

MOSCOW - Dalton Thompson scored a game-high 16 points for the Trojans, who lost a nonleague game against the Bears at Bear Den.

"We had 16 turnovers tonight, 10 in the first quarter," Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. "And we had three really bad turnovers that led to six straight points by them. We continue to struggle from the floor and free-throw line, and that's unacceptable. Defensively, we're doing OK; we just can't score and are going to keep working at it. We're getting a lot of shots, but we're just not making them."

Corey Koski had 11 points and nine rebounds for Post Falls (5-8), which hosts Lake City on Friday in a 5A Inland Empire League game.

Dane Randall scored 11 points for Moscow (8-4), which hosts Coeur d'Alene on Jan. 26.
