| January 15, 2013 8:36 PM

Nicholas Edmund Cain passed away at age 61 on Dec. 7, 2012 at 8:40 a.m. at Kootenai Medical Center. Nicholas was born on June 22, 1951 to Harold and Phyllis Cain in Circleville, Ohio. He was raised on a 100-acre farm with four brothers and 2 two sisters: Hal, Timothy, Fred, Mark, Cathy and Marchanne. He loved to read, play drums, work on crossword puzzles, and anything that involved the outdoors. He graduated from Westfall high school in 1969 and received an A.S from Clackamas Community College in 1978.

Drafted, in 1969 he joined the Navy and made it a career for 28 years. During this time, he was a diesel mechanic, a Navy SEAL, and eventually a BUD/S instructor. Besides making the ultimate sacrifice for his country, he even took time off to assist in local tragedies. Nicholas was one of the first responders to the "Challenger" accident among diving other scenes. Throughout his entire life he enjoyed the water and took to fishing in his spare time.

Married twice, Nicholas gave birth to three sons and one daughter: Rachelle, Ryan, Noah, and Jared. In 1998, he was diagnosed with Autoimmune Hepatitis, which almost took his life. His recovery was miraculous. For the last 14 years, he raised his two sons, Noah and Jared, 22 and 21, by himself. As his sons got older, he took to reading and collecting stamps again. He was also an avid Seahawks and Gonzaga bulldogs fan, never missing a game. His final wishes were to have a Navy burial at sea.
