NIC BASKETBALL: Riled-up women dump CSI, lead SWAC
* WOMEN
TWIN FALLS - Walking into their rival's gym, the second-ranked North Idaho College women's basketball team knew that they weren't going to get much love from the College of Southern Idaho fans.
As it turns out, they had enough of their own from Coeur d'Alene.
Sophomore Hannah Love had 11 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Cardinals past the Golden Eagles 60-42 and into sole possession of first place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
NIC (19-1, 4-1 SWAC) built a 35-24 halftime lead and extended the lead throughout the second half, outscoring CSI 11-2 on fast-break points.
“It was nice to be able to extend the lead a little bit there,” NIC coach Chris Carlson said. “I though Hannah did a good job inside and we had to have some kids step up. It was a big game for her and it was nice to see some outside shots start to drop.”
Earlier in the day, a newspaper article in the Times-News of Twin Falls called the Cardinals’ 18-1 record, which included a loss at Salt Lake last week, deceiving. CSI beat Salt Lake by 15 points two days later.
“Their newspaper questioned us and our record and questioned if we’re legit or not,” Carlson said. “We just went out and played our game and proved we’re legit.”
Katie Buskey scored 12 points and Georgia Stirton and Angela Woods added nine points each for NIC, which hosts Utah State-Eastern on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
“I thought Georgia played a great point guard again tonight,” Carlson said. “She handled the ball really well and hit some baskets and was a steady leader. It was a big win for us.”
In other SWAC women’s action, Utah State-Eastern (5-12, 3-3) beat Snow (8-11, 2-3) 64-59 in Ephraim, Utah, and Salt Lake (12-6, 3-2) beat Colorado Northwestern (12-8, 1-4) 68-47.
Colorado Northwestern visits NIC on Saturday.

TWIN FALLS — Chris Sarbaugh made two free throws with 12.6 seconds remaining as the 18th-ranked Cardinals held on to defeat the Golden Eagles in SWAC play.
Sarbaugh hit a 3-pointer on the Cardinals’ first possession of the game, but they went 0 for 10 the remainder of the game.
“It definitely wasn’t pretty,” NIC men’s coach Jared Phay said. “But our defensive effort was good enough and gave us a chance to win the game.”
James Webb had eight rebounds and seven points and Sarbaugh had a team-high 12 points and four assists for NIC (17-3, 4-1 SWAC), which hosts Utah State-Eastern on Thursday.
“James was rebounding the ball really well and playing some good defense,” Phay said.
CSI is 13-6, 1-4.
Elsewhere in the SWAC, Snow (14-4, 2-2) defeated Utah State-Eastern (11-7, 2-2) 59-56 and league-leading Salt Lake (17-2, 5-0) defeated Colorado Northwestern (7-13, 0-5) 100-62.
