PREP BASKETBALL: Thompson lifts Tigers past Hawks

RATHDRUM - John Thompson hit a 5-foot jumper with just under a minute remaining to give the Timberlake Tigers the lead for good in a 54-50 nonleague win against the Lakeland Hawks on Friday night at Hawk Court.

"It was pretty tight most of the game," Lakeland coach Dave Stockwell said. "We battled them pretty well and had a couple of guys out. They put a lot of good defensive pressure on us in the first half and really kept it up from start to finish."

Alex Opland scored 18 points and Tyler Stanford had eight rebounds for Lakeland (6-6), which travels to Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday.

Keegan Scott scored 15 points and Thompson had 11 points and eight rebounds for Timberlake (10-2), which hosts Priest River next Saturday in the Battle for the Buck spirit game.

WALLACE - Brock Arthun scored 22 points to lead the Miners past the Warriors in a North Star League game at Kirby Krulitz Court.

"Brock had a good game," Wallace coach Bruce Bailey said. "Kootenai came out and played like they always do and played hard and never gave up. We just got a lead and were able to keep the lead throughout the game."

Jake Pfeiffer scored 10 points for Kootenai (4-4, 2-1 NSL), which hosts the Kellogg junior varsity on Monday.

Brady Brantley scored 10 points for Wallace (6-4, 2-1), which travels to Clark Fork today.

"We had a good first quarter and then fell behind and didn't come out strong in the second half," St. Maries coach John Bisson said. "They played really strong, in-your-face defense."

Joiner had six rebounds and Jordan Stapleton had six points, four assists and three steals for St. Maries (5-4), which hosts Orofino today at 3:30 p.m.

RATHDRUM - Kelly Ramus scored six of her team-high 12 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Hawks past the Tigers at Hawk Court.

"We applied some pressure and were able to force some turnovers," Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. "Turnovers started to turn into points and it was nice to have some shots fall. In the first half, it was all Timberlake. They really worked us and out-executed us. Our girls and I came to an understanding at halftime and our defense was really, really good in the second half."

Kaidan Kelsey had nine rebounds, Josie Coder 11 points and five steals and Ramus had eight rebounds for Lakeland (3-14), which hosts Sandpoint on Thursday.

Jessica Norlander scored 16 points, Sydnie Malloy eight for Timberlake (2-12), which travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday.
