ATHOL - A fire believed to have started in the chimney area caused extensive damage to an Athol-area home on Thursday.

No injuries were reported.

Fire crews were called to the two-story, 2,753-square foot at 32201 N. Sahara Road just east of Athol off Howard at 11:15 a.m.

"The roof collapsed in the center of the house," said Jim Lyon, spokesman for Timberlake Fire. "Upon arrival, crews believed it was contained to the chimney, but not long after that, they called for additional resources because it spread to the attic."

Fire and water damaged the living room and some other areas of the home built in 2005, Lyon said. Firefighters didn't have an estimated amount of damages.

The homeowner, Ken Walker, told firefighters he has insurance.

Four people live at the home, including the Walkers, a senior who they take care of and their juvenile son.

They will stay with acquaintances while the home is repaired.

One of the homeowners was home when the fire started and heard crackling coming from the fire insert, Lyon said.

"The wall started to bubble in the upper chimney area," he said.

Lyon didn't know what contents were destroyed.

"They were able to save some valuables, including pictures and furniture," he said.

Northern Lakes, Sagle and Spirit Lake assisted Timberlake on the fire.
