GUNS: Israel offers insights

| January 9, 2013 9:02 PM

In response to Jim Spurr’s January 2nd letter about gun control, enough already! Why is it that when a family driving down the road is hit head-on by a drunk driver and killed, there is no call to ban alcohol or cars, the instruments of their destruction? Yet when people are killed by so-called assault rifles, in that case, the instruments are ALWAYS blamed, as if being killed by a gun is somehow worse than being killed by a car. Dead is dead, folks!

Adam Lanza was a coward, like all people who commit mass murder. Notice he didn’t shoot up a police station or a gun show, places where he was likely to encounter armed resistance? If he had reason to believe that he would have encountered similar resistance at a school, he would not have been successful in murdering the 26 people he killed there. The Israelis have secure schools AND plenty of access to assault rifles in their society, and they don’t have school shootings!

There is not a single example of a tyrannical regime in the history of mankind that was successful in subjugating its people without first disarming them. It is awareness of this fact that prompted our founders to give us the 2nd Amendment, and this reason alone. If we as Americans are willing to disregard their wisdom, we are not using “common sense.” We have taken leave of our senses!
