PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Sandpoint trips Lakeland for first time since '07
SANDPOINT - Sandpoint junior Hailey Olin returned from injury to stuff the stat sheet with 10 points, six steals, five rebounds and three assists, leading the Bulldogs past Lakeland 43-31 in the 4A Inland Empire League opener for both teams Saturday night at Les Rogers Court.
While it might not have been the prettiest win, it marked the first time the Bulldogs (7-6, 1-0 4A IEL) have beaten the Hawks (2-13, 0-1 4A) since Dec. 13, 2007. Lakeland had won the last 17 meetings between the two teams.
First year Sandpoint head coach Bill Bender liked his team's high-pressure defense, which forced the Hawks into a host of turnovers.
"We had some crisp execution on offense, we just couldn't get the ball to drop," said Bender, whose team started slow after a lengthy break and had some turnover issues as well. "We were obviously a little rusty from not having played."
Madi Shoening scored 11 points and was 6 of 9 from the foul line, as the Bulldogs finished 19 of 26 from the stripe as a team, many coming in the fourth quarter. Jordan Speelmon added seven points, four assists and three steals and set the pace for the Bulldogs' offense.
Josie Coder hit two of her three long-range bombs in the first quarter, as the Hawks jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead, and finished with a team-high 13 points. Jordan Ward added six assists and three steals, Kacie Derby seven points and five boards and Kaidan Kelsey eight points for the Hawks, who led by one at half.
"We played a pretty good first quarter, then got into foul trouble," said Hawks head coach Steve Seymour. "We started playing a little softer and Sandpoint played a little harder, and had a great fourth quarter defensively."
On Tuesday, Lakeland hosts Moscow and Sandpoint travels to Kellogg.

"I thought we played good defense throughout," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "But we couldn't buy a bucket in the second quarter (shot 1 for 10). But when you hold a team to 34 points in a game, that's pretty good. It was nice to see everyone contributing and a little bit from everyone."

"The difference in the game was the third quarter," Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. "We let down when they picked up and that was enough to be the deciding factor."
Sydnie Malloy and Jessica Norlander each scored nine points for Timberlake (2-10, 0-3), which travels to Newport on Tuesday.
Steffie Pavey scored nine points for Priest River, which hosts Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.
"I told the girls that the Battle of the Buck (Jan. 19 with Timberlake) is at their place and it's going to be hard to win with a crowd in the thousands, so we got to take care of the ones at home," Priest River coach Gary Stewart said.
