College basketball UCLA beats Stanford for 7th consecutive victory

Shabazz Muhammad scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half when UCLA pulled away to defeat Stanford 68-60 on Saturday at Los Angeles, extending its winning streak to seven games.

Jordan Adams added 12 points and Kyle Anderson had 12 rebounds for the Bruins (12-3, 2-0 Pac-12), who are on their longest run of consecutive wins since taking 10 in a row during the 2008-09 season. They won their eighth straight at home against Stanford, and 11th in their last 12.

The victory allowed UCLA to complete a sweep on opening weekend of Pac-12 play. The Bruins beat California 79-65 on Thursday.

Dwight Powell had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Chasson Randle added 17 points for Stanford (9-6, 0-2). The Cardinal lost at Southern California 71-69 two days earlier, and they fell to 9-29 on the road in conference play dating to the 2008-09 season. They have dropped 15 of their last 16 on the Los Angeles road trip.

No. 3 Arizona 60, Utah 57: At Tucson, Ariz., Solomon Hill had 19 points, Mark Lyons hit two free throws with 7.2 seconds left and Arizona (14-0, 2-0 Pac-12) beat Utah.

Utah's Jarred DuBois shot a 3-pointer at the buzzer that bounced off the rim, hit the top of the backboard and hit the rim again before missing.

Utah (8-6, 0-2) opened conference with an overtime loss to Arizona State on Wednesday and kept Arizona within reach by hitting 14 of 27 shots in the second half.

California 72, Southern California 64: At Los Angeles, Allen Crabbe scored 27 points on 9-of-12 shooting and the Golden Bears (9-5, 1-1 Pac-12) beat the Trojans (6-9, 1-1).

No. 1 Duke 80, Wake Forest 62: At Durham, N.C., Ryan Kelly scored a season-high 22 points and Duke (14-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat Wake Forest (7-6, 0-1).

Seth Curry also had 22 points, Quinn Cook had a career-high 14 assists and Kelly finished with his fourth straight 20-point performance against Wake Forest.

No. 11 Illinois 74, No. 8 Ohio State 55: At Champaign, Ill., Brandon Paul scored 19 points and Illinois beat Ohio State.

The Illini (14-2, 1-1 Big Ten) led 37-25 at halftime and used a 13-2 run early in the second half to build a 50-27 lead.

Illinois used stingy defense to shut down the Buckeyes (11-3, 1-1), who shot just 33 percent from the field and turned the ball over 16 times.

No. 12 Missouri 66, Bucknell 64: At Columbia, Mo., Phil Pressey scored a career-high 26 points and Laurence Bowers added 16 to help the Tigers (11-2) beat the Bison (13-3).

St. John's 53, No. 14 Cincinnati 52: At Cincinnati, JaKarr Sampson scored 16 points and D'Angelo Harrison added 15 and St. John's (9-5, 1-1) beat the Bearcats (13-2, 1-1 Big East).

Cashmere Wright, who finished with 23 points, hit two 3-pointers in an 8-0 run that pulled Cincinnati within one with 2:32 left in the game. Wright's layup with 53 seconds to play gave the Bearcats a 52-51 lead.

Marquette 49, No. 15 Georgetown 48: At Milwaukee, Davante Gardner made two free throws with 8.3 seconds left and Marquette (11-3, 2-0 Big East) had to hang on while Georgetown (10-2, 0-1) missed a deciding free throw.

With Marquette leading 49-46, Greg Whittington of the Hoyas was fouled by Trent Lockett on a baseline 3-point shot with 2.3 seconds left. He made the first two free throws and after Marquette coach Buzz Williams called a timeout, hit the back of the rim on the final attempt.

Lockett grabbed the rebound, but missed two free throws and the game ended without the Hoyas attempting a final shot.

No. 16 Creighton 79, Indiana State 66: At Omaha, Neb., Doug McDermott had 25 points and nine rebounds, and Creighton used a 19-4 run to break open a close game in the second half in a victory over Indiana State.

The Bluejays (14-1, 3-0) have won eight straight and are off to their best start in Missouri Valley Conference play since 2003-04.

The Sycamores (9-5, 2-1) lost for the 14th straight time in Omaha since 1999.

No. 17 Butler 57, New Orleans 44: At Indianapolis, Kellen Dunham scored 15 points and Khyle Marshall added 13, leading Butler (12-2) past New Orleans.

The Privateers (3-10) were led by Lovell Cook with 11 points and Traddarius McPhearson with 10. But they have lost five straight, are 0-6 in true road games this season and have dropped 15 consecutive road games against Division I opponents.

No. 18 Michigan 84, Purdue 61: At East Lansing, Mich., freshman Gary Harris scored a season-high 22 points, and Michigan State used a 28-7 run in the second half to pull away from Purdue (7-7, 1-1).

The Spartans (12-3, 1-1 Big Ten) missed their first 10 shots from the field after halftime, but it didn't much matter in what quickly became a free throw contest. Michigan State finished 18 of 22 from the line, and the Boilermakers were 9 of 20 - including 6 of 16 in the second half.

No. 21 Notre Dame 93, Seton Hall 74: At South Bend, Ind., Scott Martin had a season-high 22 points on a career-high six 3-pointers and Jack Cooley added 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead Notre Dame past Seton Hall, the 11th straight win for the Irish.

The winning streak is the second-longest for the Irish (13-1, 1-0 Big East) in 13 seasons under coach Mike Brey. The loss ended a seven-game winning streak for Seton Hall (12-3, 1-1).

No. 25 Kansas State 73, No. 22 Oklahoma State 67: At Manhattan, Kan., Rodney McGruder scored all but two of his 28 points in the second half, and Kansas State (12-2, 1-0 Big 12) beat the Cowboys (10-3, 0-1).

No. 23 North Carolina State 78, Boston College 73: At Boston, Scott Wood atoned for a scoreless first half with 12 points in the second, hitting two 3-pointers and six free throws down the stretch as North Carolina State (12-2, 1-0) held off Boston College (8-6, 0-1) in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.

Rutgers 67, No. 24 Pittsburgh 62: At Piscataway, N.J., Eli Carter scored 23 points and Rutgers held off a second-half rally to defeat the Panthers.

The Scarlet Knights (10-3, 1-1 Big East) led by 14 points at halftime only to see the Panthers (12-3, 0-2) twice close the gap to two points in the final 5 minutes, the last time at 55-53 on a dunk by Steven Adams with 3:24 to play.

Louisiana Tech 55, Texas-Arlington 52: At Arlington, Texas, Alex Hamilton had 14 points for the Bulldogs, six of which came in the final 2:35 to spark Louisiana Tech (12-3, Western Athletic Conference) to a victory over Texas-Arlington (6-6, 1-2).

New Mexico State 78, Texas State 67: At Las Cruces, N.M., Daniel Mullings had 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists to lead New Mexico State (8-8, 2-2 WAC) past Texas State (4-12, 0-4).

San Jose State 76, Seattle U 71: At San Jose, Calif., James Kinney had 26 points and seven rebounds to lead the Spartans (8-6, 3-1 WAC) past the Redhawks (5-8, 0-3).

Saint Mary's 74, Loyola Marymount 61: At Moraga, Calif., Matthew Dellavedova scored 17 points, dished out eight assists and grabbed five rebounds to lead Saint Mary's (12-3, 1-0 West Coast Conference) past Loyola Marymount (7-8, 0-2).

BYU 80, San Francisco 76: At San Francisco, Tyler Haws and Matt Carlino both scored 22 points and BYU (12-4, 2-0 WCC) rallied past the Dons (7-8, 0-2).

Pepperdine 54, Portland 47: At Malibu, Calif., Stacy Davis had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead Pepperdine (9-6, 1-1) past Portland (7-10, 0-2 WCC).

Montana 62, Portland State 55: At Missoula, Mont., Will Cherry scored 16 points and Montana (8-4, 4-0 Big Sky) beat Portland State (3-8, 1-3).

Former North Idaho College standout Renado Parker had 12 points and seven rebounds for Portland State.
