When a resolution for physical fitness results in injury, physical therapy can help you recover

| January 2, 2013 8:00 PM

While starting your new year with the best intentions for physical fitness you may find yourself with an unexpected injury, commonly referred to as a sports injury. Fortunately, most sports injuries can be treated, and those suffering from them, can return to normal physical activity with the proper care.

Injuries from exercise most commonly result from accidents, poor training practices, improper equipment, lack of conditioning, or insufficient warm-up or stretching. These types of injuries generally involve the musculoskeletal system, which includes your muscles, bones and cartilage. Sprains/strains, knee injuries, shin splints and Achilles tendon injuries are some of the most common types of injuries. Most of these injuries are acute and can include sudden or severe pain, swelling, inability to support weight, tenderness, lack of range of motion or weakness. While resting, icing, compression or elevation may be enough to recover from some injuries, others may need more attention.

While you may visit your family physician or immediate care facility to address the initial pain of your injury, a physical therapist is also a health-care professional who can develop a rehabilitation program to help you recover from the injury itself. Physical therapy would include an individualized program designed for your specific injury or pain and help you recover faster. Along with your recovery, your therapist can help you understand the best possible way to exercise in the future, preventing any future injury or delay on your path to physical fitness.
