Idaho lands Neyer at quarterback

MOSCOW - Anthony Neyer is the first quarterback to sign with coach Paul Petrino and, even though he is a comparative newcomer to the position, he has what Petrino seeks in a signal caller.

"Anthony has great talent," said Petrino of Neyer, a 6-foot-2, 215-pounder who joins the Vandals in January after two seasons at Pierce College (Los Angeles) and one (his true freshman season) at USC.

"He throws a nice ball with a great release," Petrino said. "We are very excited to have him join the team in January and compete for the quarterback job."

Returning quarterbacks on the current roster are Taylor Davis, who will be a senior next year, and former Coeur d'Alene High standout Chad Chalich and Austin DeCoud, who both redshirted as freshmen this past season.

At Pierce College, Neyer completed 32 of 65 passes for 422 yards and two touchdowns as a sophomore in 2012. He initially attended USC but transferred after his freshman season.

He is a 2010 graduate of Xavier Prep (Palm Desert, Calif.) where he completed 99 of 191 passes for 1,466 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior. He also played linebacker (68 tackles and two interceptions) and punted.
