'Race the Joe' jet boat event planned

Plans to launch a new jet boat river race on the St. Joe River at St. Maries are moving ahead.

Benewah County Sheriff Dave Resser approved the marine permit last week, and the city of St. Maries approved the event permit for the first "Race the Joe!" river boat race scheduled for May 17-19.

The event is sponsored by the St. Maries Chamber of Commerce and Epic Motorsports Consulting Group, L.L.C..

The weekend will feature two days of action-packed racing on the St. Joe River from the Idaho Forest Industries Landing to the Calder Bridge and back with several race legs along the 25-mile course each day.

"We have several teams that have contacted us and confirmed they have made reservations to come to Race the Joe," said Kyla Sawyer, Epic spokeswoman.
