Four Trojans nab state titles

| February 24, 2013 8:00 PM

POCATELLO - Post Falls sophomore Drake Foster didn't bother cooling down before his state 5A championship match at 120 pounds at Holt Arena on Saturday afternoon.

In fact, he could just be warming up.

Foster pinned Chase Green of Madison High in Rexburg 1 minute, 18 seconds into the first period for the Trojans to win his second straight state title after winning at 106 pounds in 2012.

"I knew that I had to be really focused heading into it," Foster said. "After they introduced us (for the finals), I just never stopped warming up after the 98-pound match. It's kind of shocking to me to have won two straight. Not many people can say they've gone 2-for-2. But as my dad told me, the target on my back is going to keep getting bigger and bigger."

Post Falls finished with four champions — Foster, freshman Alius De La Rosa (106), senior Austin Wilson (160) and sophomore Seth McLeod (170) — to finish second as a team for the second straight year, this time with 232.5 points.

“It’s exciting for Alius as a freshman to get a title,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “All of our champions all the way through the tournament were really dominant. Foster had a perfect tournament, Alius pinned three of his four opponents, Austin (Wilson) was dominant in his matches — and Seth pinned or majored (decision) all his opponents. All of them did a great job.”

Coeur d’Alene sophomore Anthony Price pinned Bridger Carpenter of Idaho Falls in 3:55 for the 98-pound championship.

“It’s amazing,” Price said. “It’s the best thing in the world to be a state champion right now. To be mentioned with the people that have gone out there and done it at Coeur d’Alene — it’s a great feeling.”

“Anthony fell behind early because Carpenter came out really aggressive,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “But he did a great job of keeping his composure.”

Centennial High of Boise scored a record 318.5 points to win the state 5A team championship.

“Heading into state, we knew that Centennial was bringing a lot of guys (25 total),” Foster said. “We knew it would be tough to beat them. Our guys wrestled their hearts out, but in that situation — they just kind of ran away with it.”

“We just weren’t as deep as they were,” said Reardon of Centennial. “We knew we’d have to wrestle well, but just on sheer numbers — they had the advantage and wrestled great.”

Lewiston, which won last year’s 5A tournament, finished fourth with 166. Coeur d’Alene finished ninth.

5A: Foster, who’s also won national championships at the Greco-Roman and Folkstyle level, was familiar with Green from facing him previously.

“My game plan was to go in and throw him,” Foster said. “I knew he wasn’t as strong at Greco, so I threw him and pinned him.”

De La Rosa pinned Dorian Sapien of Boise for his first title at 106 pounds.

“I went in knowing he’d be a tough kid to face,” De La Rosa said. “I’d been scouting him for a little bit and just came out prepared to lay the hammer down.”

Seth McLeod’s older brother Nathan won a state title last year as a senior at 182 pounds. Now, he’s got one to go with it.

“It feels awesome,” McLeod said. “It still hasn’t set into my brain yet. I’ve been dreaming of this since I was 5 years old. I knew I had an edge on him and tried to do my best and let the match unravel itself. In the beginning of the match, I got him to his back a couple of times and was hoping to get the pin, but wasn’t able to.”

Wilson beat Kaden Steingruber of Rocky Mountain 5-1 in his title match.

Peter Berger (113) and Cody Johnson (182) finished second, T.J. Wolf (126) and Tannar Riekena (132) third and Ryan Failor sixth at 195 for Post Falls.

“I’m proud of our team,” Reardon said. “These guys kept getting better and better all year. At the start of the year, we weren’t among those top teams, but we just kept working and improving. It was a great effort and they did a great job this weekend.”

Matt James was third at 285, A.J. Konda fourth at 113, Hudson Staub fifth at 170 and Phoenix Duncan sixth at 182 for Coeur d’Alene, which finished ninth.

“Matt came back and did an amazing job getting the pin for third,” Moffat said.

Nick Wells was fifth at 126 for Lake City.

4A: Dustin Hannawalt (126), Brandon Yount (140) and Killian Estes (170) finished fourth for Lakeland, which finished sixth with 140 points in the team standings.

“The kids wrestled hard,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “We had some kids really step up and wrestle above where they were seeded. To place in the top 10 in 4A is an accomplishment. There’s some really tough teams fighting for those trophies.”

Tyson Hendricks (113), Austin Hoobler (120), Chad Miller (138) and Will Putman (145) each finished sixth.

“Our kids really matured at the right time,” Edelblute said. “We had some heartbreaking losses early in the tournament, but they came out and wrestled really well to get to the medal round.”

Jon McCormick finished sixth at 182 for Sandpoint, which finished 21st.

3A: Blaine Invernon of Bonners Ferry won his fourth straight state title, defeating Chase Call of Shelley 6-1 in the 138-pound championship match.

Aaron Smith (98) and Carman Krichbaum (195) finished third and Parker Davis (145) and Quinn Cummings (160) finished fifth for the Badgers.

Kellogg’s Blake Ivie pinned Kaden Bench of Snake River in 5:07 to win the 120-pound title. Kenneth Berry finished sixth at 182 for Kellogg, which finished 13th.

Kody Hongslo finished second at 126, Tyler Badertscher third at 152, Forrest Herring fourth at 170 for Timberlake, which finished ninth.

Priest River’s Tanner Popkin finished second at 132, Brian Fink third at 170 and Dallas Hopkins sixth at 145. The Spartans finished 16th.

2A: Senior Joe Bloomsburg finished second at 152 pounds for St. Maries, which finished ninth.

Logan Dittman was third at 106, Josh Richmond fifth at 126 and Hayden Humphrey sixth at 106 for St. Maries.

Matthew Speelman (182) and Billy Schwartz (220) finished fourth for Kootenai.

Wallace senior Curtis Dolson was second at 220.
