Note: Not all events are listed since they have not set actual dates this early in the year.
As you can see, 2013 brings an abundance of great events to keep you and your friends and family physically active.
Here are some basic points to consider when preparing to participate in any distance or multi-sports event:
• Be sure to read and understand all event details like age limits, packet pickup times, start times and course map. Most races require you to sign a liability waiver. Read them before you sign.
• Race distances vary depending on age group, type of race and in some cases, the event could be an open fun run for a charity with no set distance requirements.
• Ensure you're outfitted with appropriate shoes, clothing, hat, sunscreen, etc. for the weather conditions and type of race. If you're not properly prepared, it can lead to a very unhappy set of blisters, sunburn or a chilly outing!
• You should eat a good dinner the evening before the race with a good balance of complex carbohydrates and protein. For the elite or experienced athletes, their race day preparations are very specific to the individual. For the occasional athlete, you should start your day with a nutritious breakfast, avoid sugary foods and drink plenty of water throughout the day of the race. Stay hydrated, this is important for the whole family.
• Remember to make the event fun and encourage and support your family and friends whether they finish or not. These events can be a great family activity and at the same time promote a healthy lifestyle and improved fitness.
• Set a goal to participate in a set number of events throughout the year. Tie a fitness program to these goals and recruit friends and family to train with you.
Now with so much happening in the upcoming months, get out there and take advantage of the opportunities. We live in one of most beautiful places in the country where you can get out on almost any weekend year round and get involved in a fitness event or activity.
