PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Kootenai advances to state

COEUR d'ALENE - Boone Benson scored 16 points to lead the Kootenai Warriors past the Clark Fork Wampus Cats 46-43 in the championship game of the 1A Division II District 1 tournament on Wednesday at Lake City High to advance to the school's fourth straight state tournament.

Jake Pfeiffer scored 12 points for Kootenai (8-10), which opens the tournament against the District 4 runner-up next Thursday at 12:15 p.m. PST at Caldwell High.

Joey Hazinsky had 15 points and five assists and Tristin Bristol 15 rebounds for Clark Fork, which finishes 6-15.

TROY - Chris Adams scored 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the 3-point line as the Panthers eliminated the Maniacs in a loser-out game of the 2A District 1-2 tournament at Troy High.

Coeur d'Alene Charter outscored Orofino 12-6 in the final quarter.

"Mainly, we played a lot better defense and did a better job of not allowing offensive rebounds," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Chris Pedersen said. "Orofino didn't miss many 3-pointers and did a really good job, but we just did a better job on defense in that fourth quarter."

Bryan Smith had seven rebounds and Christian Pedersen added 15 points, six rebounds and four assists for Coeur d'Alene Charter (14-8), which faces St. Maries tonight at 6:30 in the second-place game at Kootenai High in Harrison.

Scotty Lee scored 23 points for Orofino, which finishes 8-13.

TROY - Sam Solberg scored 16 points, Derek Brown added 13 and the Bulldogs rallied past the Lumberjacks in the 2A District 1-2 tournament championship game.

Grangeville (13-8) advances to the state tournament, starting next Thursday at Capital High in Boise.

Warren Joiner had 17 points and 13 rebounds for St. Maries (13-9), which plays Coeur d'Alene Charter in a loser-out game tonight at 6:30 at Kootenai High. The winner will advance to a state play-in game on Saturday in Grangeville.

"In the second half they were able to rebound and get some high-percentage shots and we weren't able to stop them," St. Maries coach John Bisson said. "In the second quarter we were able to to click offensively and we were able to get some stops.

"We played Charter recently and it should be a good game. It's do or die and both teams are looking to get to Boise."

COEUR d'ALENE - Leighton Boyd had 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor and grabbed five steals as the Knights defeated the Miners in Game 2 of the 1A Division I District 1 tournament at Lake City High to win the series 2-0 and clinch a berth in a state play-in game.

Lakeside (11-11) will face the winner of Friday's game between Lapwai and Clearwater Valley at St. Maries High on Saturday at 6 p.m.

"We mixed up our defenses a lot in the second quarter from a 3-2 and a full court press," Lakeside coach Brad Calkins said. "The kids were hungry and came focused and ready to play. Leighton has really been coming on the last part of the season and just had a great night."

Joe Brown had 12 points and Hunter Kolar had six rebounds and five assists for Lakeside, which forced 21 turnovers.

Brady Brantley scored nine points for Wallace, which finishes 10-11.
