COEUR d'ALENE - Doug Schatz and Leighton Boyd each had 14 points to lead the Lakeside Knights to a 42-36 win over the Wallace Miners in Game 1 of the best-of-3 series 1A Division 1 District 1 tournament at Lake City High.

Game 2 is set for Wednesday, also at LCHS, at 7:30 p.m. Game 3 will be Friday, if necessary.

"It was a very hard-fought, gritty win for us," Knights coach Brad Calkins said. "It was our first district game as a group and we showed a lot of mettle in closing out the game."

Calkins said the game was a two-or-three point contest most of the way, and that the Miners stepped up and played very well.

"It has been our normal duo (Schatz and Boyd) doing the job for us," Calkins said. "They both played real solid and each hit some key free throws down the stretch to close out the game."

Schatz grabbed 10 rebounds and Boyd added seven.

John Dellinger led Wallace (10-10) with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Lakeside (10-11) did most of its damage at the foul line, connecting on 16 of 28 attempts. They managed to hit only 13 of 42 shots from the floor.

"We knocked down our free throws to sustain the lead," Calkins said.

COEUR d'ALENE - Mullan's Tyler Henderson was 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, but Kootenai managed to fend off the Tigers to take a first round win in the 1A Division II District 1 tournament at Lake City High.

Kootenai (7-10) advances to play Clark Fork in the championship game on Wednesday at LCHS at 6 p.m.

Mullan finishes at 1-17.

"It was a good game," Warriors coach Doug Napierala said. "Both sides played really hard, and it was a tight first half."

Napierala said that Kootenai was able to run more and push the ball in the second half, stretching the lead to 12-15 points.

"Mullan was able to close it back up on foul shooting," he said.

TJ Placencio and Tyler Henderson hit 3-pointers to help narrow the gap near the end, but Napierala said his team forced some turnovers and "we just ran the clock out on them."

Napierala said Jake Pfeiffer did a good job inside and Ry Butler defended Placencio well.

Kootenai has beaten Clark Fork in 2 of their 3 meetings this season, with each team winning once in overtime.

RATHDRUM - The Badgers lived up to their nickname and fought to the finish, but fourth-quarter free throw shooting helped the Tigers hold on in a 3A district semifinal at Lakeland High School.

Senior John Thompson had a big game in the post for Timberlake, scoring 26 points and snaring 14 rebounds.

"He had a huge night for us," Tigers coach Tony Hanna said. "John's not typically one of our leading scorers, but he took it to them on offense and had a strong game at both ends of the court."

Timberlake (17-3) opened a double-digit lead before Bonners Ferry made a run in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, cutting the Tigers' lead to two points.

Led by Keegan Scott's 6-for-6 effort, Timberlake sank 10-of-12 fourth-quarter free throws to seal the win, Hanna said.

Scott and Trevor Masterson added 10 points apiece for the Tigers, who face Priest River (11-9) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday for the district title and a berth in the state tournament.
