RATHDRUM - The Rathdrum/Westwood Historical Society is "building on the past."

The nonprofit has launched a capital campaign with the theme to support history projects and educational programs at the old Kootenai County Jail and the society's museum.

Campaign supporters can purchase a tile for a mural of Rathdrum's historic Main Street that will be on display at Stein's IGA/Family Foods in Rathdrum.

"This campaign will not only raise funds, but will place an everlasting piece of art in our local Stein's Family Foods store, which has graciously allowed us to put this mural in their store for future generations to enjoy," said Susan Hopper, society president.

Mural tile sponsorships consist of $25,000 or more for center locations on the mural, $2,500 for a grouping of four tiles and $500 for single tiles. Other amounts will be accepted and the tile space will be adjusted accordingly.

Space on the tiles will be dedicated to recognizing donors. Donors can also remain anonymous.

The fundraiser runs through April 30.

Although much of the old jail and museum has been restored, more restoration work is needed and there are ongoing educational programs and projects, Hopper said.

"Therefore, this campaign for funds has been created," Hopper said. "It is our desire to raise funds for the continued acquisition, preservation and education of the history of Rathdrum and our surrounding areas."

The society is partnering with Custom Tile by X-Things of Post Falls and Stein's on the project. Similar fundraisers were done for the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce building and the Post Falls Food Bank.
