Youth Challenge Academy director named
Derek Newland was named the director of the new Idaho Youth Challenge Academy on Friday.
The academy in Pierce in Clearwater County in north-central Idaho will give more than 200 high school dropouts statewide each year a second chance to earn their high school diplomas or GEDs.
Newland flew and instructed new military pilots of the Idaho Air National Guard. He later assumed management roles as one of the 124th Fighter Wing's commanders and recently retired from his military career.
By the end of the five-month program, the cadets will have earned credits preparing them to reintegrate back into public schools or attain either their high school diploma or their GED. It is considered an alternative high school.
The program is available in 27 states and is overseen by each state's National Guard senior officer.
