PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Vikings headed to state again
GRANGEVILLE - Senior Caelyn Orlandi had 12 points and five assists for the Coeur d'Alene Vikings in a 51-40 win against the Boise Braves in a state 5A play-in game on Saturday at Grangeville High to advance to their ninth straight state tournament.
"We pulled away in the third quarter, but let them back in in the fourth," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "Both Sydni (Parker) and Madison (Sumner) were all over the place defensively and their defense really made it go today. They (the Braves) didn't get to shoot the ball as much and didn't score and it gave us more opportunities to do what we needed to do."
Sydney Williams scored 13 points, Brittany Tackett had nine points and six rebounds, Sumner added eight points and three steals and Parker had four steals for Coeur d'Alene (19-5), which faces Rocky Mountain of Meridian (20-3) in the opening round of the state tournament on Thursday at 7 p.m. PST at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
Coeur d'Alene senior forward Kendalyn Brainard, who sat out the last two games with a severely sprained ankle, is scheduled to be re-examined Tuesday. Her status for state is unknown.
Megan Lee, Maddie Skaggs and Isabelle Hadden scored 11 points each for Boise, which finishes 11-12.
