PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Timberlake nabs 1st league title in school history

| February 10, 2013 8:00 PM

BONNERS FERRY - Johnny Hayden scored 14 of his 26 points in the first half to lead the Timberlake Tigers past the Bonners Ferry Badgers 65-53 in an Intermountain League game on Saturday, clinching the first boys basketball league title in school history.

"We're excited about it," second-year Timberlake coach Tony Hanna said. "We knew this team had the potential to do it. We've had the same guys in place for a while. Right now, we're just trying to keep our heads down and remain focused on getting to state and playing well in districts. I think we've got a good chance and we're going to give it all we've got."

Three others scored eight points each for Timberlake (15-2, 5-0 IML), which hosts Wallace on Tuesday.

Evan Moe and Ryan Farrens scored 12 points for Bonners Ferry (5-13, 1-4).

"We were able to jump out on them early," Hanna said. "They got physical with us tonight and were battling our big guys inside and did what they had to do to take care of our guys inside."

"We just played fantastic," Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. "We just got hot early and played with a ton of energy. The Bear Den is a strange place to play; it seems like every game is in the 40s or high 30s. And for us to come out and play like we did should be a huge confidence builder going into districts."

JJ Winger added 12 points, Riley Moreen 11 for Lake City. Kyle Guice had 12 rebounds, Justin Pratt 12 assists.

"We defended them very well, took away a lot of their offensive sets," Reed said. "We were really pleased with the defensive effort."

Ryan Walde drained two 3-pointers and added 12 points for the Vikings (12-8), and Justin Carpenter threw down a dunk, but it was Naccarato who set the tone early by dominating on the blocks.

"He was all over the place, with a lot of activity on the glass," said Vikings interim coach Darren Taylor. "He was very aggressive to the glass. One of our best performances of the year."

Jeremiah Gagnon dropped in 13 points for the Bulldogs (2-17), who trailed by nine at half but were never able to make a run.

Despite Sandpoint's record, coach Tyler Haynes believes his team will be a factor at the 4A Region 1 tournament, when they travel to Lakeland in the opener on Tuesday.

"These guys are ready for districts. Their character has maintained through a tough season," said Haynes, who tipped his hat to the play of Coeur d'Alene and Naccarato. "They've had adversity, and to come in and be focused like that speaks volumes. Naccarato is going to be tough to contain for the next two years."
