NIC ROUNDUP: Cards capture Region 18 title

| February 10, 2013 8:00 PM

* WRESTLING

OREGON CITY, Ore. - In his first matches since finishing third at last year's NJCAA wrestling tournament, North Idaho College sophomore Ryan Zumwalt didn't let his team down.

Zumwalt won his second regional championship at 165 pounds for the Cardinals, who claimed the Region 18 tournament championship by 23 points at Clackamas Community College.

"After not wrestling all year, Ryan stepped up and did a great job," NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. "He's been rehabbing from knee surgery (last summer) and we put him in there to see what would happen. It was a tough decision to sit Jake Mason because he's such a hard worker, but we thought Ryan gave us the best chance to win a national title. For Ryan to capture back-to-back regional titles was huge."

Sophomores Brock Banta (125 pounds), Michael Carreon (133) and Jeremy Golding (149), and freshman V.J. Guilio (197) also won regional titles for NIC, which won its first Region 18 championship since 2010 after Clackamas won the last two seasons.

“It’s nice after being away for two years to get it back,” said Whitcomb, who was also named Region 18 Coach of the Year. “It’s good to be able to bring it back to Coeur d’Alene.”

NIC qualified all 10 wrestlers to the NJCAA tournament Feb. 22-23 in Des Moines, Iowa. The Cardinals also had three second-place finishers and two third-place finishers.

“You can’t score points if you’re not there, but it was nice to not have any fourth-place finishers,” Whitcomb said. “We’d only lost two matches going into the finals and I think that sets up nice for two weeks for now. If we can wrestle like this then, I’ll be really happy.”

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to nationals.

COEUR d’ALENE — Hannah Love had 10 points and seven rebounds to lead the fifth-ranked Cardinals past the Spartans in a Scenic West Athletic Conference game at Rolly Williams Court.

“Our defense was rock solid,” NIC coach Chris Carlson said. “Colorado (Northwestern) is playing a good game of basketball. It was a grind. They’ve beat Salt Lake and CSI this year. They’re playing well.”

Tori Davenport of Post Falls hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second half to help NIC pull away.

“She helped us get a little bit of separation and opened it up a little bit,” Carlson said.

NIC (25-2, 10-2 SWAC), which remains tied for first place in the conference, travels to Snow on Thursday.

In other SWAC women’s play, 19th-ranked Southern Idaho (17-10, 10-2) beat Utah State-Eastern 70-58 in Twin Falls and Salt Lake (15-9, 6-5) beat Snow (9-16, 3-8) 56-48 in Salt Lake City.
