POST FALLS - Rafa Hewett-Steiger scored 17 points as the suddenly-hot Bengals edged the Trojans at The Arena in 5A Inland Empire League play to earn the No. 2 seed to the Region 1 tournament, which starts next week.
Lewiston (6-14, 3-3 5A IEL) won its last three league games - over an 11-day span - to finish tied for second with Coeur d'Alene (11-8, 3-3).
But Lewiston earned the tiebreaker by splitting with 5A IEL champ Lake City (14-5, 5-1), which swept Coeur d’Alene.
In the first round of regionals next Friday, at Lake City High, No. 2 Lewiston plays No. 3 Coeur d’Alene at 5:45 p.m., followed by No. 1 Lake City vs. No. 4 Post Falls (8-12, 1-5) at 7:30.
Dalton Thompson had 11 points and five rebounds for Post Falls.
“We were 6 of 21 from the foul line tonight,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “Lewiston was 9 for 10 in the fourth quarter. For the game, we shot 41 percent from the field and 39 percent from beyond the 3-point line, but you can’t shoot 29 percent from the line in the IEL. We did everything we should have to win, but when we shoot free throws like that, you can’t win and we need to get better at that.”
