| February 7, 2013 8:00 PM

Kay Serene Kurath, age 66, born on Dec. 29, 1946, was welcomed into heaven on Feb. 4, 2013, after a brief illness.

Kay was born in Norwalk, Conn., to Louis and Norma Serene. She grew up on the East Coast. She married Raymond Rupprecht and relocated to Spokane, where she raised two daughters.

She had a special love of children, and was able to be a full-time homemaker, passionate in sewing and baking, and active in her daughters’ school activities.

She later went back to school and earned a master’s degree at Eastern Washington University and went to work there as the career counselor for eight years.

She married Edward Kurath on March 20, 1999, and relocated from Spokane to Post Falls. After retiring from EWU, she enjoyed gardening, organic cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Kay is survived by her husband Edward Kurath, her daughters Heather Rupprecht Gross (Rob) of Spokane Valley, and Michelle Rupprecht Dahl, of Seattle, stepchildren John Kurath (Stacey) of Boulder, Colo., and Wendy Kurath Gonzales of Bellevue, Ohio, and her 10 adoring grandchildren, Chris, Ryan, Taylor, Hannah, Sarah, Tyler, Colby, Madelyn, Morgan, and Lacey.

She is also survived by a half-brother Tom Serene (Clyone) and a half-sister Carol (David). Kay’s generous heart and kindness to everyone she met will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 10, at 2:30 pm at Valley Assembly, 15618 E. Broadway, Spokane Valley.
