PREP BASKETBALL: Lewiston ends Lake City's season
* GIRLS
LEWISTON - Lake City's season of improvement came to an end Tuesday night with a 45-24 loss to Lewiston in a loser-out game of the 5A Region 1 tournament at Booth Hall.
"They zoned us most of the game and we couldn't hit shots," Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. "Give them credit; they knocked down shots. We took the Wilson sisters out of the game, and Emilee Schlader came in and hit buckets at key times."
Amber Hawkes led Lake City (10-12) with six points. Madi Farrell and Kassie Torres had seven rebounds each, and Hailey Jackson had four assists.
"I appreciated my girls' effort all season," said Kelly, who took over the program just days before preseason practice began last fall. "They never quit; they never backed down."
Schlader and Karlee Wilson each scored 10 points for Lewiston (16-6), which plays at Coeur d'Alene on Thursday in a loser-out, winner-to-play-in game.

SANDPOINT — Managing just five second-half points, the No.3-seeded Hawks bowed out of the 4A Region 1 tournament with a loss to the No. 2 Bulldogs in a loser-out game at Les Rogers Court.
Josie Coder scored nine points to lead Lakeland, which shot 7 of 30 from the field and finished 3-18.
“I told (Sandpoint) coach (Bill) Bender I thought his kids were outstanding in the second half. Unfortunately, the better team won tonight,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “Sandpoint’s effort and execution were much better than ours.”
Hailey Olin, who just recently switched to point guard, dropped in 15 points for Sandpoint (14-9), which shot 17 of 34 from the field, and travels to Moscow on Thursday in the championship round. Sandpoint has to beat Moscow twice to win the regional title; Moscow needs just one win over Sandpoint to advance to state.

COEUR d’ALENE — The Timberwolves held the visiting Bulldogs to just two baskets in the first half — both in the opening quarter — and built a 33-7 lead at intermission.
“We played great defense — kids were flying around, the energy level was great,” Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. “Defense turned into easy baskets at the offensive end.”
Riley Moreen led Lake City (14-5) with 11 points. Kyle Guice added seven points, 11 rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists.
On senior night, Lake City started all five seniors and two of them who normally come off the bench, Eric Redal and Evan Murphy, helped give the Timberwolves a spark early.
“Eric Redal and Evan Murphy started the game out with great energy and gave us a huge spark right from the start,” Reed said. “You could tell how much it meant to them; they played really hard.”
Thomas Edwards was the top scorer for Sandpoint (2-16) with six points.
