Timberline inhabits renovated building
One of the oldest buildings in downtown Coeur d'Alene has been extensively renovated in a many-month project. The result with the original Northern Pacific Railway building at 201 N. Third St. is fantastic in retaining the 1915 character of the place. This involved the original bricks, woodwork, windows and even many fixtures. New materials used in the reconstruction represent the area's historical character of mining, logging and railroads.
The owners are John and Erin Swallow, and the occupants are of Timberline Drilling, which is owned by Martin Lanphere, Lew Walde and John Swallow, with its headquarters in Coeur d'Alene. Offices are here and in Elko, Nev. With 120 employees, its operations are in Elko and Juneau, Alaska. Managers of the core-drilling company are John Dietel and C.J. Larsen.
The second occupant of the 4,200-square-foot building is Johnson Construction. Owner Rob Johnson and his employees were "hands-on" workers, Swallow said, with Jason Servey and Rick Mort hand-fabricating the metal work to retain the historical character of the place.
Johnson Construction's specialties offer high-quality personalized craftsmanship in custom lake homes, commercial projects and remodels. Phone 755-4362.
Solar Flair in Riverstone
A walk through the place reveals much more than tanning equipment. Solar Flair Sun Salon at 2073 N. Main St. in Riverstone offers traditional UV tanning, a leg tanner, right-light therapy, spray tans, an infrared sauna, teeth whitening, hand-crafted jewelry, seasonal clothing and beachware.
Owners Mark and Lisa Barnhouse previously were with dental and construction work. Originally from Paradise, Calif., in 1989 they came to North Idaho to raise their five sons. They have two employees and offer a "customer-oriented environment with affordable and convenient services," Lisa said.
Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays with Sundays added in March. Phone 664-9191. Check www.solarflairsunsalon.com and Facebook.
Springhill Suites earns LEED award
The SpringHill Suites by Marriott under construction at 2250 W. Seltice Way is the first hotel in Idaho built to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The credit of LEED is based on green building criteria of sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources and indoor environmental quality.
With its opening planned for June 1, the Coeur d'Alene hotel will have 118 suites on four levels, a large indoor pool, outdoor splash pad and fire tables, a three-hole putting green, a rotating electronic art display and a manager's beer and wine reception for guests 21 and older. Other amenities are a complementary hot breakfast, laundry service, free WIFI connectivity and a business center and boardroom.
Now for the Tidbits
- New primary occupants in Silverlake Mall will be JoAnn's Fabrics slated to open Feb. 15 and Sports Authority on May 15. Another sporting goods store is hoping to open in Coeur d'Alene. More later.
- Other businesses to open in Hayden include Sport Clip Haircuts (watch for details on this next week) and Capone's Bar & Grill in April.
- Does anyone know for sure what will be happening at the corner of Highway 41 and Mullan Avenue where the trailer park was removed in Post Falls?
- Or about a possible WinCo in Hayden?
- The reality of "Pay It Forward" happened to me this week. I was in LaFiesta Restaurant with my daughter and grandkids. One-year-old Max could sit for only minutes and then had grandpa give him a tour of the place. My dinner was partially in a "take-home" box. When I went to pay the bill, my server said it had already been paid by a fellow who left before we did. Wow. I'll pass this along sometime.
- The spelling of both the word for pamphlet and aviator is "flier," not "flyer" as in articles printed last week.
- The first novel written on a typewriter was "Tom Sawyer."
