PREP ROUNDUP: Lakeland nabs title at Bonners tourney

BONNERS FERRY - Justin Wright (106 pounds), Tyson Hendricks (113), Dustin Hannawalt (126) and Jesse Putman (152) each placed first in the respective weight brackets and the Lakeland Hawks won the team title at the two-day Bonners Ferry Invitational on Saturday.

Bonners Ferry finished second and St. Maries took third in the eight-school tournament.

Tyler Siegford (98), Austin Hoobler (120), Chad Miller (138), Brandon Yount (145), Karsen Walker (160), Killian Estes (170), Tanner Read (182) and Brandon Kurtz (285) each finished runner-up.

Will Putman (145), Brandon Mailhot (152), Kenny Zaken (160) and Josh Kaplan (195) all placed third.

Dan Behmer (106), Tanner Wright (138) and Conor Shepherd (220) all finished fourth.

Aaron Smith (98), Blaine Invernon (138), Quinn Cummings (160), Carman Krichbaum (195) and Morris McAlister (285) won titles for Bonners Ferry.

Other winners included Blake Ivie (120) of Kellogg, Aaron Kolar (132) and Matt Speelman (182) of St. Maries, Chris Vergobbi (145) of Kellogg, Brian Fink (170) of Priest River, and Curtis Dolson (220) of Wallace.

Lakeland hosts Timberlake on Thursday in its final dual before the 4A Region 1 tournament Feb. 16 at Lakeland.

"I think they all wrestled really well and it was a great weekend for us," Lakeland assistant Zack Horsley said. "The kids got some wins and had a lot of fun. If they wrestle like they did this weekend (at regionals), we will be in good shape."

KELLOGG - Trailing by two points at halftime, the host Wildcats outscored the Lumberjacks 15-4 in the third quarter to take control in the girls "Brawl for the Ball" spirit game, a nonleague tilt at Andrews Gymnasium.

"We threw a junk defense at them, and our defense forced a lot of turnovers," Kellogg coach Eli Bourgard said.

McKenna Stewart scored 12 points to lead Kellogg (9-8), which will be the No. 3 seed to the 3A District 1 tournament, which begins Monday at Lakeland High in Rathdrum. Kellogg will play No. 2 Bonners Ferry (14-5) on Monday at 7:30 p.m., after No. 1 Priest River (13-7) plays No. 4 Timberlake (4-15) at 6.

Lakin Anxo scored eight points for St. Maries (6-14), which plays Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy (16-3) on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Coeur d'Alene High in the first round of the 2A District 1-2 tournament.

CLARK FORK - Mariah Miller scored 13 points as the Wampus Cats beat the Miners in a North Star League game to secure the No. 1 seed to the 1A Division II District 1 tournament.

"It feels great it didn't have to go to a coin flip," Clark Fork coach Dexter Vogel said. "It's much better to have won the game. It was a good game until the fourth quarter, but we were able to pull away at the end. Both teams played hard and it was a good game."

Tess Vogel, Annie Wurm and Alicia Heigis had nine rebounds each for Clark Fork (8-12, 5-3 NSL), which faces the winner of Monday's Kootenai-Mullan game in their district championship game on Thursday at Lake City High.

Jordan Browning scored 18 points for Wallace (11-9, 6-2), which faces Lakeside in the Game 1 of a best-of-3 series in the 1A Division I District 1 tournament on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Lake City.
