PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lake City falters late in loss at Lewiston
LEWISTON - Lake City led most of the game, but Sam Heitzman scored the go-ahead basket on a post move with 18 seconds left in the game, and the Lewiston Bengals upended the 5A Inland Empire League champion Timberwolves 48-46 on Saturday at Booth Hall.
Heitzman scored a game-high 17 points for Lewiston (5-14, 2-3 5A IEL), which moved into third place in the 5A IEL. Rafa Hewett-Steiger added 14 for the Bengals, who beat Coeur d'Alene at home on Tuesday.
"Really, we played well for 3 1/2 quarters; it was frustrating to see us not finish," Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. "As well as we've been playing, it was frustrating. But give them credit; they played very well."
Riley Moreen scored 16 points for Lake City (13-5, 5-1). Kyle Guice was limited by foul trouble and finished with four points.
Lake City plays host to Sandpoint on Tuesday. Lewiston can steal the No. 2 seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament with a win at Post Falls on Friday.

MOSCOW - Jeremiah Gagnon scored 15 points for the Bulldogs, who were held to 17 points after the first quarter in a 4A Inland Empire League loss to the Bears at Bear Den.
"We came out and got a lot of rebounds and some good looks at the basket in the first quarter," Sandpoint coach Tyler Haynes said. "We got the same looks in the second half, but they just didn't drop."
Sandpoint (2-15, 0-4 4A IEL) travels to Lake City on Tuesday.

KELLOGG - Taylor Bircher and Garret Wendt scored 13 points each for the Wildcats in win over the Lumberjacks in the "Brawl for the Ball" spirit game at Andrews Gymnasium.
Wendt had nine rebounds for Kellogg (11-6), which hosts Lakeland on Tuesday. Kellogg also won the ball trophy.
"I thought our defensive effort was outstanding," Kellogg coach Jeff Lambert said. "They got ahead 15-4 at one point, but our effort came alive and we played defensive for three quarters."
Warren Joiner scored 15 points for St. Maries (10-6), which travels to Moscow on Tuesday.

"We played good defense in the first half and my guys played hard," Clark Fork coach Corey Vogel said. "In the third quarter, we didn't shoot the ball well and they were able to take the game away from us."
