RATHDRUM - Corey Koski scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Friday, helping Post Falls beat Lakeland 62-57 in the Battle for the Prairie Pig spirit game Friday night at Hawk Court.

The key stretch came in the third quarter when the Trojans embarked on a 15-4 run to take a 45-37 lead over the Hawks.

Tyrel Derrick scored a career-high 33 points, including 11 for 12 from the free-throw line, to go with four assists for Lakeland (4-3).

"They were 3 for 3 from the 3-point line in the third quarter," Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said. "Tyrel did a good job taking the ball to the basket. Derek Bayley hit a big 3 down the stretch. We were always within two or four points, but we never could quite get past that."

Lakeland has not beaten Post Falls (4-3) in the rivalry game since 2001.

"The kids were really excited for this game," Ryan said. "There was a great crowd and there was a lot of great energy. Year in and year out, they have a really good team. For our kids to have been this close and have a chance to win gives us some pretty good confidence going into the Christmas break. This was as close as we've gotten in the three years I've been here."

Derek Bayley scored eight points and Jake Ram had five rebounds for the Hawks.

Lakeland won the spirit competition.

Post Falls plays Prairie of Vancouver, Wash., in its first game of the Coeur d'Alene Inn-vitational on Thursday at North Idaho College.

Lakeland returns to action Jan. 2 against Wilson High of Tacoma in its first game of the Lake City holiday tournament.
