Today's eagle count

| December 10, 2013 10:54 AM

There were 86 bald eagles counted today in the Wolf Lodge Bay area of Lake Coeur d'Alene.

Carrie Hugo, U.S. Bureau of Land Management wildlife biologist, says there were 73 adult and 12 immature birds sighted. The age of one of the birds could not be determined.

"This time last year I counted 203," Hugo wrote, in an email sent to local media members. "Today there were 23 in Beauty Bay and a handful that were nice and visible between Boothe Park and Higgens Point."

The birds visit the area each year at this time to feed on the spawning kokanee salmon in that area of the lake.
