COEUR d'ALENE - They're not just gardeners.

Members of the Coeur d'Alene Garden Club also care deeply about their community, and they showed it Monday when they distributed $12,000 to 11 area nonprofits.

The funds were raised during the group's annual Garden Tour held in July. Bonnie Warwick, chair of the club's Garden Tour committee, presented checks to representatives of each of the agencies during a ceremony held in the backyard of the Dalton Garden residence of Henry and Debbie Lane. The Lanes' garden was a stop on this year's tour.

"We know that this monetary award will be used to continue the good work you do in your special endeavors," Warwick said. "The garden club applauds your community spirit and thank you on behalf of your chosen recipients."

During the tour, the gardens are opened to the public who pay an admission fee to take the self-guided tour of several gardens in Coeur d'Alene, Hayden and Dalton Gardens.

The club has about 60 members, Warwick said, and 40 of them volunteered on the day of the tour.

"I feel so proud of that," Warwick said. "The spirit of volunteerism is what this is all about."
