SEDDON: Excels where it counts

| April 24, 2013 9:00 PM

Ann Seddon stands out to me as a sincere, participatory, individual with character.

Ann is “exactly” what a community needs as trustee. She has and demonstrates values. Ann gives of herself. Prior to becoming a Trustee, she was a school teacher and volunteer in our schools. She continues to volunteer even as a Trustee.

Ms. Seddon is relentless in digging into the shortcomings our students have in the basic curriculum. Mathematics in particular.

We should question; based on current performance of our students, why prior school board members of 5 and 10 years ago were not focused on the basics of education? Had they been as dogged in that pursuit we would not see the glaring deficiencies we now have.

Ann holds teachers, advisers and the superintendent accountable. Prior boards did not do that.

Ann’s hard work has found 48.8 percent of graduates in our local high schools require remediation in math prior to proceeding with college courses. 39 percent of those graduates require remediation in English/Reading.

These results are what they are because that is what the community has chosen to accept. And there are those who wish to return to a board which allowed our community to get to this point. Focusing instead on “sounds nice” programs that have little educational substance, concentrating instead on placating a teachers union, and never being bold enough to offer and insist on change.

Ms. Seddon along with others works hard for the benefit of Coeur d’Alene students. She works to benefit “all” students. Not to simply please teachers or administration or even some parents.

Ms. Seddon has never resorted to characterizing trustee candidates as wackos, Aryans, ultra left or right, etc. She instead represents a steadfast display of character, intelligence, dedication to school children and community. She is perfect for the job as Trustee.
