PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur d'Alene boys, girls capture Lake City golf invite

COEUR d'ALENE - Even without a few of their top players, Coeur d'Alene's boys shot a 307 to win the Lake City Invitational by one stroke over Lewiston at the Coeur d'Alene Golf Club.

Stephen Roller shot an even-par 72 to finish second overall and lead Coeur d'Alene. Chase Lincoln added a 74.

"Those were our 6-through-10 kids," Coeur d'Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. "He (Roller) may have shot himself back into the top five."

Derek Bayley of Lakeland was medalist with a 1-under 71.

Duncan was also pleased with his "third" team, which didn't officially factor into the team results, but shot 331 and would have finished fifth. Alex Callahan led that Viking squad with a 76.

In the girls tournament, Mackenzie Phillips, playing at No. 3, shot an 82 and finished second overall to lead Coeur d'Alene to a 347 and an eight-stroke victory over Lewiston.

"Our other girls picked up the slack," Duncan said. "Mackenzie Phillips really came through."

Next up for most local teams is the Palouse Ridge Invitational in Pullman, on Thursday (boys) and Friday (girls).

ST. MARIES - Gavin McCarter and McKenzie Rose earned medalist honors as St. Maries' boys and girls defeated Wallace at St. Maries Golf Course.

McCarter, who shot a 6-over 41, won a three-way playoff with teammate Ryan McNulty and Wallace's Duncan Brain with a par on the 180-yard par-3 seventh hole.

Next up for St. Maries is the Palouse Ridge Invitational on Thursday in Pullman.

POST FALLS - Alyssa Huffaker went 3 for 4 with three runs scored in the first game and Paige Wells had three RBIs in the second game as the Bengals swept the Trojans in a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader.

"Lewiston just hit the heck out of the ball and hit it where we weren't today," Post Falls coach Jack Foster said. "It was pretty chilly out today, but they just played well."

Tayler Ekness hit a solo home run in the first game and Cassi Worley added a solo home run in the second game for Post Falls (2-9, 0-3 5A IEL), which travels to Sandpoint on Thursday.

Sydnie Malloy, the No. 3 hitter, went 3 for 4 and scored three runs for Timberlake (6-4, 3-1 IML), and Katie Malloy, the No. 5 hitter, was 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs.

ST. MARIES - Kendall Brusseau drove in three runs in the first game for the Lumberjacks, who split a Central Idaho League doubleheader with the Tigers.

Kari Ghramm also had three RBIs in the first game for St. Maries (5-10, 2-5 CIL), which returns to action at Potlatch on April 27.

In the second game, St. Maries allowed 11 unearned runs on 12 errors in the loss.

"It was just night and day between the two games," St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. "The majority of those runs in the second game came with two outs."

COEUR d'ALENE - The Vikings won all five matches at No. 1 to beat their city rivals.

"I was happy for the win, except for the fact we haven't played since March 26," Coeur d'Alene girls coach Laura Taylor said. This was only our second match of the year."

Lake City boys coach Tim Scott had praise for the play of junior Mitch Williams, who won at No. 3 boys singles for his first varsity victory of the year.

"He had his focus, moved his feet well and kept the ball in play," Scott said. "It was cold and windy, and you really had to move your feet."

Lake City travels to Moscow today.

Coeur d'Alene is scheduled to host Lewiston and Moscow on Saturday.
